Nokia has unveiled plans to expand its fixed networks Research and Development (R&D) facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The new lab will be the largest within Nokia’s fixed networks division and one of the largest globally.

The expansion, facilitated with the support of the Tamil Nadu state government, underscores Nokia’s commitment to advancing technology and bridging the digital divide.

The state-of-the-art Nokia facility will drive innovations in 10G, 25G, 50G, and 100G Passive Optical Networks, Fixed Wireless Access, Wi-Fi, Multi-Dwelling Unit solutions, and access network and home controllers.

The Tamil Nadu government was pivotal in the facility’s expansion, providing critical infrastructure and regulatory and policy support. This collaboration highlights Chennai’s growing significance as a global technology hub and reinforces Asia’s role in technological advancements.

The landmark expansion marks a new chapter in Nokia’s efforts to enhance its technological capabilities and contribute to India’s growth in the global tech arena.

A Memorandum of Understanding formalising the expansion was signed in San Francisco, California, United States. Thiru. M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and Dr T. R. B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Tamil Nadu government, witnessed the agreement.

Dr T. R. B. Rajaa said: “Tamil Nadu has emerged as a premier destination for R&D and technology services. This development reflects our growth and promises high-value employment opportunities for our youth.”

Vimalkumar Kothandaraman, Head of Fixed Networks for Asia Pacific at Nokia, added: “Our R&D expansion in Chennai is crucial to our fixed networks strategy. This investment reinforces our dedication to both India and global technological progress.
