Pentagon deploys military units along US-Mexico border

To thwart illegal migrants, drug traffickers
The Pentagon is accelerating efforts to fulfil US President Donald J. Trump’s directive to boost US military support units along the US-Mexico border by deploying a Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) and a General Support Aviation Battalion (GSAB) to the region.
Pentagon Press Secretary Sean Parnell confirmed on March 2, 2025, that the deployment is part of a broader strategy to enhance border security operations. The approach involves utilising the unique capabilities of these units to ensure the US southern border is adequately protected from illegal migrants, drug smugglers, etc.
Each Stryker Brigade Combat Team comprises approximately 4,400 soldiers and is built around the Stryker vehicle—an eight-wheeled, armoured platform known for its speed, protection, and firepower.
These brigades are highly regarded for their rapid deployment capabilities and versatility, with a record of accomplishment of responding swiftly to various operational demands. The Stryker is designed to be transportable by C-130 Hercules aircraft, which can be deployed to critical areas within 96 hours. The vehicle’s balance of mobility and strength makes it ideal for operating in challenging environments like those found on the US-Mexico border.
In addition to the ground forces, the deployment includes the GSAB, which comprises around 650 personnel. This battalion provides air support, including UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters for command and medical evacuations and CH-47 Chinook helicopters for heavy lift operations. These assets are crucial for ensuring enhanced operational reach, logistical support and the ability to evacuate personnel in emergencies.
“The Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the General Support Aviation Battalion will play a key role in reinforcing our efforts along the southern border. Their swift mobility and versatile capabilities will ensure that we can address any operational needs, while supporting the mission of securing the US-Mexico border,” Parnell said in a statement.
The strategic deployment of these forces is designed to enhance coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in maintaining the United States’ sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security.
The Stryker’s robust design makes it particularly well-suited for the vast and varied terrain along the border. At the same time, the aviation battalion’s assets ensure seamless coordination between ground and air operations, further strengthening the overall security posture.
This latest deployment marks the continuation of active-duty US troop deployments to the US-Mexico border, which began after President Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. The Trump administration has made securing the southern border a top priority, with a focus on addressing illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Following Trump’s declaration to “seal the border,” the Pentagon had mobilised 1,600 Marines and soldiers by late January, joining the 2,500 reservists already in place to support border operations.
On his first official day as US Defence Secretary in late January, Pete Hegseth addressed the scale and flexibility of the mission. “Whatever is needed at the border will be provided,” Hegseth said, highlighting the Pentagon’s commitment to supporting the US president’s agenda for enhanced homeland defence.
As the deployment of these units progresses, the Pentagon emphasises its ongoing dedication to securing the southern border, signalling a comprehensive approach to maintaining the safety and security of the United States.
