Purva Grover, Dubai-based author, completes and wins NaNoWriMo for the 8th time!

Purva Grover, a reader (52 books a year), author (4 books), journalist & creative entrepreneur, adds another accolade to her list of achievements. Her latest victory at NaNoWriMo marks her 8th time to win this title.

On 28th November 2024, Purva won the challenge

to completewhat could hopefully be her next book, interestingly titled Hummus, Heels & Highrises. “It’s a working title, but it’s definitely about Dubai — specifically, all the people you meet at the parties in Dubai. I have attempted to write a ‘funny’ draft of anecdotes, observations, and more. I am hopeful it will bring a good laugh to every reader,” said Purva Grover.NaNoWriMo is a nonprofit organization that provides tools, structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds — on and off the page. Each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a new novel.
Purva has participated in and won the NaNoWriMo challenge three years in succession, 2016, 2015, 2014, and then lately in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. Purva added, “Each year, I asked myself the same question — why do I torture myself? The very thought of it is scary — to achieve this feat while maintaining a daily work-life balance. I find my answer in the global, lovely, large, warm community of writers. While the forum provides the structure to help people achieve their creative goals and build new worlds on and off the page; its biggest strength lies in providing a supportive community 24 hours a day during this journey. On various social media channels, you can ask any kind of question or clear any doubt – from which app to write to what to call your character, get an opinion on your synopsis, provide tips to newbies, play the critic, or be a writer buddy. And that’s what keeps one going.”

Purva firmly believes that every story matters and must be shared, and her latest achievement is just another step in that direction.

Excerpt from (working title, Hummus, Heels & Highrises):When I think about people, I think about how much or how little they eat. How punctual are they, or how terrible are they at using traffic as an excuse for their delayed arrivals? I think of how mindful they expect me to be of their busy schedules with mounting work pressures and much-needed holiday travel. I think about how much space a person occupies in my living room or that of others or their own, in inches when I have a fair idea of the size of the floor tiles and in feet when I have a fair idea of their heights; and how well do they own up or account for the space they occupy; and if they were to be put in a box and votes were cast on space occupation vs. contribution, would they topple down or stand tall? I  also think of what makes them return to the parties and what makes me commit to the parties. When I think of people, I realize I am neither a ‘party person’ nor a ‘people person’.
