Ras Al Khaimah set to host 2025 Highlander hiking event
On 80km Jebel Jais trails
Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) supports the 2025 edition of Highlander, the premier long-distance hiking challenge organised by Highlander Adventure, one of the world’s largest hiking series.
The event will take place from February 7 to 9, 2025. Hikers and adventure seekers will traverse the spectacular trails of Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, home to the UAE’s longest-developed network of hiking trails, which spans 80km.
Participants will have the unique opportunity to hike through areas rich in heritage, discovering ancient Emirati settlements and active farms that exemplify the Arabian Gulf region’s history and cultural diversity. Hikers will experience firsthand how local communities have thrived in this rugged terrain for centuries.
The 2025 challenge will feature three distinct hiking formats, each designed for different levels of experience and adventure.
Highlander Pegasus
The first, Highlander Pegasus, is a 40km, three-day backpacking experience aptly named after the mythical winged horse and constellation that adorns the northern sky.
This format promises an immersive adventure. Participants must carry all essential gear—including camping, hiking, and cooking equipment—throughout the event. Hikers camp under the stars each night, fully absorbing the natural beauty of Ras Al Khaimah’s mountainous landscape.
Highlander Orion
For those looking for a shorter challenge, Highlander Orion offers a 25km trek over two days from February 8 to 9. Named after the prominent winter constellation visible in the northern hemisphere, this trek also embraces the backpacking spirit, allowing participants to engage deeply with their surroundings.
Highlander Lyra
Highlander Lyra is a new addition to the Highlander lineup. It is a single-day challenge covering 20km. Named after the musical lyre of Greek mythology, this format provides a perfect blend of challenge and enjoyment. It is ideal for beginners eager to build their confidence and skills for future hikes. Participants will complete the trek in one day, carrying only essential gear, making it a perfect entry point into the hiking world.
Experienced organisers will supervise all three challenges, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for participants. Hikers will also traverse several historical sites and active farms, enriching their experience of Ras Al Khaimah’s cultural tapestry.
Aligned with Ras Al Khaimah’s vision of becoming a leading sustainable tourism destination, Highlander Adventure promotes a philosophy of enjoying the outdoors while minimising environmental impact. The event will incorporate educational sessions focused on ecology, reinforcing the importance of preserving Ras Al Khaimah’s natural environment and cultural heritage.
Fadi Hachicho, Managing Director of Highlander Adventure UAE and Founder of Adventurati Outdoor, said: “The fourth edition of Highlander Adventure reaffirms our region’s appeal to adventure travel and sports enthusiasts, with last year’s event attracting 240 participants from 20 different countries.
“We are committed to showcasing the rich heritage and culture of Ras Al Khaimah with every event we organise, enhancing our programmes with more entertainment and wellness initiatives. Highlander Adventure is not just about hiking; it celebrates nature, community, and environmental preservation.”
