Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi top global smartphone market in Q2 2024
US sanctions hurt Huawei
Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi have collectively commanded half of the global smartphone market in the second quarter of 2024, highlighting their continued dominance in the industry.
According to the latest IDC Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker data, these three tech giants have each made significant strides in capturing consumer interest and market share.
From April to June 2024, Samsung led the pack with approximately 19% of the 285 million smartphones shipped globally. Apple followed closely with a 15.8% share, while Xiaomi trailed behind with a 14.7% market share.
Vivo and Oppo rounded out the top five smartphone vendors for the second quarter, each holding around 9% of the market.
Transsion flops
This marks a notable shift as Transsion, previously among the top five, fell out of the rankings. The Chinese company, known for its substantial presence in emerging markets such as Africa, had dominated the first quarter of 2024 but could not maintain its position.
The data underscores a trend observed over the past decade: Apple and Samsung have consistently held the top spots in the global smartphone market during the second quarter of each year.
Exceptions to this pattern have included Xiaomi and Huawei, with the latter’s impressive rise during the latter half of the 2010s. Huawei once surpassed Samsung as the top smartphone brand worldwide in Q2 2020 but saw its growth halted by US sanctions by the end of that year.
Chinese competitors
As Huawei’s influence waned, its Chinese competitors quickly absorbed its market share, particularly Xiaomi and Oppo. These companies have held a combined market share of 22 and 27% over the past several years, including the second quarter of 2024.
The competitive landscape of the smartphone market continues to evolve, with Chinese manufacturers increasingly challenging Apple and Samsung’s longstanding duopoly.
As technological advancements and consumer preferences shift, these key players will continue to reshape the market dynamics in the coming months.
