Sharjah Self-Defense Dominates Opening Day of NAS Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2025

Sharjah Self-Defense Sports Club made a strong start on the first day of the NAS Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2025, excelling in the teens (14–15 years) and youth (16–17 years) divisions. Organised by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) in collaboration with the Dubai Sports Council, the event is part of the 12th edition of the NAS Sports Tournament.

Sharjah’s athletes delivered strong performances, finishing the day at the top of the medal standings. Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu Club claimed second place, while Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club took third.

As one of the largest sporting events in the UAE during Ramadan, the NAS Sports Tournament features 11 disciplines and attracts elite competitors across various age groups. This year’s jiu-jitsu competition has drawn over 400 male and female athletes, underscoring the sport’s growing popularity in the region.

Wednesday’s competitions were attended by a host of dignitaries, including His Excellency Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation; Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Assistant Secretary-General of the Dubai Sports Council; His Excellency Yousef Abdullah Al Batran, Board Member of the UAEJJF; Abdulrahman Amin, Director of Dubai Sports TV Channels; and Adel Al Bannai, Chairman of the tournament’s Technical Committee.

“The NAS Sports Jiu-Jitsu Tournament 2025 is a key event that brings together top athletes in a competitive environment, showcasing the sport’s growth in the country,” said His Excellency Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri.

“The strong performances we saw on Wednesday, along with the large crowd turnout, highlight the success of the Federation’s efforts to promote jiu-jitsu and expand its reach. This helps develop a generation of champions capable of representing the country at continental and international championships. We are confident that our athletes will gain valuable experience through their participation.”

Leonardo Moreira Marcelino, coach of Palms Sports – Team 777, added: “Our athletes put in strong performances on Wednesday, and we saw some impressive displays from other clubs as well. Some of our players secured solid wins, but the entire team gained valuable experience. Holding the tournament during Ramadan is beneficial as it helps the athletes stay in peak condition.”

Ghanem Nasser Alali of Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu Club, who won gold in the Teen/55KG division, said: “I am thrilled to have won the gold today. It was a great fight, and I was able to use the techniques I trained for. I want to thank my family and coaches for their support. I also want to thank the UAEJJF for organising this championship during Ramadan, as it helped me balance my training routine and perform at my best.”
