Silk Way Airlines airlifts 2 Beluga whales from Ukraine to Spain
Involving complex logistics mission
Silk Way Airlines has successfully transported two Beluga whales from Ukraine to their new sanctuary in Spain. This challenging mission, executed under adverse conditions such as the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, underscores the Baku, Azerbaijan-headquartered airline’s commitment to animal welfare and proficiency in managing complex airborne logistics.
The Beluga whales, previously housed at an aquarium in Ukraine, were relocated to a specialised facility in Spain to receive optimal care in a suitable environment.
Given the conflict in Ukraine, direct flights were not feasible. As a result, the whales were first transported by land from Ukraine to Moldova. From there, Silk Way Airlines took over the mission, flying the marine mammals safely to their new home in Spain.
The operation was carried out with meticulous planning and coordination. Silk Way Airlines employed its extensive experience in handling sensitive cargo, collaborating closely with animal care professionals and veterinarians to ensure the whales’ health and comfort throughout the journey.
Complex operation
Transportation involves using specialised equipment and custom-designed containers to provide the animals with a stable and secure environment during aerial transport.
Silk Way Airlines also partnered with Oceanografic and a team of international animal transporters specialising in marine mammals to facilitate the mission.
This collaboration was instrumental in the successful relocation of these magnificent creatures.
Mustafa Azimov, First Deputy Director of Silk Way Airlines, expressed pride in the achievement: “We are honoured to have been chosen for this critical mission. Our team’s expertise in managing delicate cargo, combined with the efforts of the entire rescue team and especially the crew, ensured the success of this complex operation.”
