Smart Mobility International poised to launch REEVs in the UAE this year

Beginning with the Avatr 07
Smart Mobility International (SMI), the Abu Dhabi-headquartered company specialising in the rollout of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), is set to introduce Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs) to the UAE market.
The initiative marks a significant step in the company’s mission to transform the UAE’s rapidly growing Electric Vehicle (EV) landscape with more adaptable, inclusive, and practical solutions tailored to local driving habits and infrastructure.
SMI is the exclusive distributor in the UAE of two new-age Chinese EV brands: Avatr and Neta. Avatr is an NEV brand of Changan Automobile, one of China’s top 10 automakers.
SMI’s expansion into the REEV vertical is part of the company’s commitment to providing more innovative, adaptable mobility solutions. The launch of the Avatr REEV models in the UAE is expected later this year.
Currently, SMI offers the Avatr 11 and Avatr 12, both fully electric Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) models. However, the company is preparing to expand its portfolio by launching REEV variants, beginning with the Avatr 07.

The Avatr 07 is the first model to incorporate Avatr’s cutting-edge Kunlun range-extending technology. This technology pairs a fully electric drivetrain with an onboard petrol-powered generator to extend driving range without the need for external charging stations.
Shift toward REEVs
While BEVs are powered exclusively by electricity and require external charging, REEVs offer a hybrid solution. Similar to BEVs, these vehicles use electric motors to drive the wheels but are equipped with a small petrol engine that recharges the battery while driving.
This innovation enables drivers to enjoy the benefits of electric driving for most trips, while also benefiting from the added reassurance of extended range when needed. This makes REEVs ideal for long-distance commutes, desert drives, and spontaneous weekend getaways, where charging infrastructure might be limited or non-existent.
Moutaz Louis, CEO of SMI, explained: “As more people consider switching to electric, it is not just about the cars themselves, but how they integrate into everyday life. REEVs offer drivers freedom from range anxiety, from relying on charging points, and from choosing between sustainability and convenience. This is the future of driving in the UAE.”
Meeting the needs of UAE drivers
The UAE has recently adopted electric vehicles (EVs), with strong governmental support and a rapidly expanding network of public charging stations. However, charging access and range remain significant concerns for many residents, especially those living in remote areas or frequently commuting between the seven emirates that constitute the UAE.
SMI’s introduction of REEVs aims to address these issues, offering drivers an alternative that combines the sustainability of electric power with the practicality of extended range.
Louis added: “We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to electrification. The UAE has diverse lifestyles, from urban professionals to adventure enthusiasts. Our job is to offer the right vehicle for every journey.”
UAE’s sustainability vision
The UAE is on track to meet its goal of having 50% of all vehicles on the road be electric by 2050. By expanding its product offering to include both BEVs and REEVs, SMI is helping accelerate this transition, making it easier for all drivers to adopt electric vehicles. This move aligns with the nation’s broader sustainability objectives, enabling the development of a cleaner and more efficient transportation system for the future.
“Through innovation, we aim to provide mobility solutions that are both eco-friendly and suited to the dynamic needs of the UAE market,” said Louis. “Our expanded lineup reflects our dedication to supporting the UAE’s drive toward a more sustainable and adaptable transportation ecosystem.”
Chinese automakers, largely cut off from key Western European and US markets for geopolitical reasons, are pulling out all the stops to introduce their advanced EV, PHEV, and REEV models in the UAE market in 2025.
