Space Perspective targets its first space flights this year

Capsule will take travellers beyond Earth’s horizon

Space Perspective is gearing up to launch its first commercial space flights in late 2024 in a boost to the fledgling accessible space tourism sector.

The Florida-headquartered company is the world’s first carbon-neutral spaceflight experience company. It has developed a spaceship named ‘Neptune,’ which comprises a pressurised capsule propelled by a giant hydrogen-filled ‘SpaceBalloon,’ designed to offer a safe and accessible six-hour journey to the edge of space.

Space Perspective is now inviting intrepid travellers to become part of a unique community that transcends the boundaries of Earth.

100,000ft apogee

Launching from Marine Spaceport (MS) Voyager or land on Florida’s Space Coast, and travelling at a gentle 19kmph, the pressurised capsule will ascend for two hours float at its 100,000ft apogee for two hours – offering travellers the exceptional opportunity to see the brilliant blue line of the Earth’s atmosphere from the serene blackness of space – and descend gently for the remaining two hours before a splashdown in the ocean.

Individuals can secure a seat aboard Neptune for a ticket price of $125,000 per traveller. To secure their spot, potential space travellers must make a refundable deposit of $1,000. This deposit remains fully refundable until the final balance payment, due approximately 12 months before the scheduled flight.

Neptune can accommodate eight explorers alongside a Space Perspective pilot. Travellers can confirm individual seats or coordinate with friends and family for a group experience.

Pre-flight, individuals will have the chance to meet fellow explorers, fostering a sense of camaraderie within the Space Perspective community.

The capsule’s expansive panoramic windows, the largest ever flown to space, will provide a breathtaking 360-degree view of Earth, allowing travellers to witness a night sky filled with stars, sunrise over the curved horizon, and the thin, bright blue line of Earth’s atmosphere.

Onboard amenities

According to Space Perspective, Neptune ensures a comfortable journey with amenities such as onboard Wi-Fi, live streaming capabilities, and fully-stocked bars for champagne toasts at the edge of space. The experience will be meticulously captured through interior and exterior video and stills.

The SpaceBalloon, standing over 700 feet tall, is a testament to engineering marvel and environmental responsibility. Crafted from recycled materials, the balloon ensures a near-zero-emission descent, distinguishing Neptune from traditional rocket-based space travel.

Safety measures

Safety measures are a top priority for Space Perspective. Rigorous flight testing is underway, with Neptune’s Reserve Descent System offering a fail-safe landing solution. In the eventuality of any issues, the SpaceBalloon is designed to descend slowly, ensuring a safe landing.

Post-flight, explorers will be treated to a celebration and bespoke experiences.

The innovative use of renewable and safe hydrogen propels Neptune into the modern hydrogen economy. This environmentally conscious approach aligns with Space Perspective’s commitment to offset carbon emissions and promote sustainability in every aspect of its operations.

The FAA regulates Space Perspective, which also follows guidelines established by NASA and the US Coast Guard.

Human spaceflight veterans Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum co-founded Space Perspective.
