Students Propose Practical Solutions to Plastic Waste at Ajman Sewerage Biorefinery
Students from UAE schools unveiled innovative solutions to tackle the growing problem of plastic waste during the NextGen Innovator Competition 2024, held on November 22 at the Ajman Saray, Luxury Collection Resort. Organized by Ajman Sewerage, the second edition of the competition challenged young minds to address the significant issue of plastic accumulation at the Ajman Sewerage Biorefinery, which stems from households, manholes, and other sources.
From a pool of 20 entries submitted by schools across Ajman and Sharjah, the top 10 teams presented practical and innovative ideas, accompanied by miniature models, to an esteemed panel of judges. The solutions proposed included AI sensors and CCTV image analysis to identify plastic debris, fan and sorting mechanisms for segregating plastic in sewer systems and sewer robots designed for clearing clogs to name a few. These solutions showcased creative approaches to managing and reducing plastic waste, signalling a promising contribution to the region’s sustainability efforts.
Winners Celebrate Groundbreaking Ideas
The competition recognized the most outstanding projects with top honors. GEMS Cambridge International Private School (GCS), which secured first place, presented their winning project, VibraMesh, earning them AED 20,000 along with a trophy, medals, and certificates.
VibraMesh, features a multi-layered vibrating mesh made from stainless steel or PVC, integrated with multiple sensors to detect plastics and monitor water levels. This advanced system is capable of sending automated signals, similar to GPS tracking, to mobile phones, allowing maintenance teams to respond promptly to necessary interventions. This initiative supports the preservation of local ecosystems and promotes a cleaner, healthier Ajman.
International Indian School Ajman claimed second place, receiving AED 15,000, a trophy, medals, and certificates, while Al-Hikmah Private School took third place with AED 10,000, a trophy, medals, and certificates. Additionally, a Delhi Private School Ajman student was presented with the Best Presenter Award, which included a cash prize of AED 3,000, a medal, and a certificate.
