UAE aims to reinforce its status as a key global maritime hub

Sets sail on various initiatives
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is determined to become a key global maritime powerhouse, leveraging its strategic location, world-class infrastructure, and commitment to sustainability.
The UAE’s appeal is underpinned by several factors, including a zero-income tax policy, advanced infrastructure, and its strategic location, which acts as a bridge between Europe and Asia. These advantages and a growing commitment to sustainability have contributed to the Arabian Gulf state’s growing rise as a key maritime hub.
The Emirates Shipping Association has emphasised that the UAE’s maritime industry development over the past five years has positioned the country as a key destination for international naval companies.
One of the most significant developments in the UAE’s maritime sector was the completion of the Middle East region’s first LNG bunkering operation. This milestone occurred on January 4, 2025, when Monjasa, a Danish maritime transportation company, executed the region’s first LNG bunkering operation at Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal B, supplying fuel to Costa Cruises. This operation signalled that sustainable shipping solutions are a reality in the Middle East.
Anders Østergaard, Group CEO of Monjasa, stated: “Actions speak louder than words. This operation marks the UAE’s commitment to alternative fuels today, not just in the future. We are contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable maritime sector. This achievement is not just about LNG but about showing that change is happening now.”
As part of its commitment to sustainability and innovation, the Emirates Shipping Association partnered with A.P. Moller-Mærsk in 2024 to bring UAE maritime leaders to Copenhagen, Denmark, for Maritime Leadership Program 2024. The event provided valuable insights into dual-fuel technology and retrofitting vessels to meet evolving sustainability standards.
In addition to international collaborations, the Emirates Shipping Association works to strengthen the UAE’s maritime industry by launching specialised committees. These committees focus on key initiatives, including advancing the UAE registry as a flag state, promoting decarbonisation and the adoption of alternative fuels, and creating leadership and sustainability initiatives.
The committees also provide a platform for collaboration, where members can engage with industry and government stakeholders, including the UAE’s ministries of energy and infrastructure, finance, and economy. These efforts ensure the UAE’s maritime sector remains competitive and innovative globally.
Huma Qureshi, General Manager of Emirates Shipping Association, noted: “Our focus is on creating a cohesive ecosystem that integrates sustainability, innovation, and economic growth.”
