UK National Police Air Service orders 7 Airbus H135 helicopters

First delivery set for 2027

Airbus Helicopters has secured a contract with the UK’s National Police Air Service (NPAS) to supply seven H135 helicopters as part of the first phase of its fleet renewal programme.

The firm order marks the first delivery under a framework contract signed with the BlueLight Commercial procurement agency. This agreement establishes Airbus as the exclusive helicopter supplier to NPAS for up to six years, solidifying a long-term partnership between the two organisations.

Chief Superintendent Vicki White, NPAS Chief Operating Officer and Accountable Manager, said: “With over 100 calls for air support daily, NPAS plays a critical role in saving lives, disrupting criminality, and safeguarding communities.

“The aircraft we operate today were transferred from individual police forces when NPAS was established over 13 years ago, and they are now among the oldest and most-flown helicopters in the UK fleet. We are excited to partner with Airbus on this new chapter and look forward to receiving our first of the seven new aircraft in 2027.”

Richard Atack, Interim Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in the UK, added: “We are honoured to remain NPAS’ sole helicopter provider since its inception. This fleet renewal contract further strengthens our commitment to supporting NPAS and contributes to national security. We are grateful for the trust NPAS continues to place in Airbus Helicopters.”

NPAS currently operates a fleet of 16 H135 and four H145 helicopters, which serve 43 police forces across England and Wales. Airbus Helicopters in the UK maintains and supports the fleet, ensuring the aircraft remains ready for intensive operational demands.

With more than 1,440 H135 helicopters worldwide, Airbus has established the H135 as a reliable workhorse for emergency services, having logged over 7.5 million flight hours.

The new H135 helicopters will feature Airbus’ advanced Helionix avionics system, which improves safety and operational effectiveness by reducing pilot workload. One new aircraft will initially be used to train NPAS pilots in this innovative technology, which promises to enhance operational efficiency in the field.

The seven new helicopters will begin entering service as part of NPAS’s fleet modernisation, boosting the service’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to critical situations across the UK.
