USS Abraham Lincoln CSG enters USCENTCOM AOR

Poised to deter any Iranian aggression

The USS Abraham Lincoln Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier equipped with F-35C and F/A-18 Block III fighter aircraft has entered the US Central Command (USCENTCOM) area of responsibility (AOR).

The USS Abraham Lincoln, the flagship of US Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3, is accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and the guided-missile destroyers of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21 Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21 and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9.

As of August 22, 2024, the USS Abraham Lincoln CSG, together with the USS Theodore Roosevelt CSG, are in and within striking range of Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the UAE, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

The US CSG, backed by the USS Georgia nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of hitting land targets, is in the Middle East region to serve as a strong US military deterrent to Iran and its various armed proxies in the Middle East region, who have threatened to attack Israel over recent events.

Austin’s directive

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln to accelerate its deployment to the USCENTCOM AOR earlier this month as a plus-up of US forces in the Middle East region to ensure US force protection, increase support for Israel’s defence, and ensure the US is prepared to respond to a wide range of contingencies.

A US Air Force F-22 Raptor squadron has also newly arrived in the Middle East region.

Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours, USCENTCOM forces successfully destroyed two Iranian-backed Houthi uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) over the Red Sea and one UAV in a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen.

It was determined that these UAVs presented a clear and imminent threat to US and coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region. CENTCOM stated that this action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for US, coalition, and merchant vessels.
