World Wildlife Day 2024 theme focuses on digital tech

In connection with wildlife conservation and trade

The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has unveiled the theme for the United Nations World Wildlife Day 2024 – ‘Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation.’

Scheduled for March 3, 2024, World Wildlife Day will centre on raising awareness about the latest applications of digital technologies in wildlife conservation and trade.

The global celebrations aim to shed light on the impact of digital interventions on ecosystems and communities worldwide.

CITES Secretary-General Ivonne Higuero stressed the need for digital inclusion: “Ensuring digital inclusion for all, including the most vulnerable, involves bridging financial gaps to build equitable access to conservation tools and technologies.”

The theme underscores the role of digital technologies and services in driving wildlife conservation and fostering human-wildlife coexistence in our increasingly connected world.

For the benefit of the planet

Higuero hoped the event would facilitate meaningful exchanges and reflections on how digital connectivity can sustainably benefit the planet and its people.

World Wildlife Day 2024 celebrations will be organised in collaboration with partner organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), and Jackson Wild.

The event aims to provide a platform for intergenerational exchange and youth empowerment, showcasing balanced perspectives and experiences with digital innovation in wildlife conservation and trade.

Global online activities will be part of the festivities, including the Jackson Wild World Wildlife Day Showcase and the IFAW World Wildlife Day Youth Art Contest.

The culmination will be a high-level event following World Wildlife Day on March 4, 2024.

Aligned with the UN General Assembly Resolution on World Wildlife Day, CITES has called on all member States, UN system organisations, global, regional, and sub-regional entities, non-governmental organisations, and individuals to observe and raise awareness of the 2024 theme.

Additionally, they are encouraged to organise local celebrations, involve indigenous peoples and local communities, and use World Wildlife Day logos and 2024 outreach material.
