Dubai is Set to Promote Biometric Authentication for Residency and Foreign Affairs Relations in the Country
Dubai recently announced that the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) would provide all its services through online platforms, specifically biometric authentication. As soon as all things necessary are put in place, residents can steer clear of physical verification processes when going in and out of the country.
Why has Dubai Implemented a Foreign Affairs Biometric Authentication System?
In a recent announcement, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) stated its decision to provide all foreign affairs-related services online through facial biometric recognition. This move aims to provide easy visa application mechanisms, and the government intends that all these services be done and supplied via smartphones.
Although the director of the GDRFA biometric authentication project, Fatima Salem Al Mazroui, has rightly stated that there is no fixed timeframe for the project launch, the ministry has a hands-on-deck approach for the project to be achieved soon as intended. The director further stated that the authentication services are wide-ranging and have individual procedures, which are pretty peculiar. However, the directorate foresees that these services will be cohesive through an application that unifies them and allows residents to contact the GDRFA for inquiries efficiently.
Not to leave the physical aspects out of the project, the Dubai government has confirmed that it has deployed 122 biometric smart gates to aid the passport control of passengers and make them quicker and easier. Other companies within the UAE are also beginning to adopt one form of digital identity verification or the other.
What are the Results of the Authentication System?
Dubai has continued to prove itself as a model country eager to set the pace of technology for its continent and the world. The biometric authentication system is no exception, and the accompanying benefits are a handful. The undeniable implication of the biometric authentication project is that people do not have to lug around passports and other verification documents. The waiting time at airports and other forms of travel bureaucracy is significantly reduced with digital authentication, which immediately scans the individual for identity confirmation.
Given that Dubai’s population has crossed 3.5 million persons, it has found it necessary to provide watertight measures for curbing illegal or invalid migration in and out of its territory and may attempt to evade the authorities. Likewise, with the system, the tourism sector is sure to get a boost as tourists can undoubtedly find the appeal of ease of entry and access into the country.
Conclusion
The biometric authentication project has been in the works for a while now. Although there is no intended launch date in sight, for now, Dubai is meticulous in ensuring everything is ideally in place for the system to function. The only concern would be gathering and getting persons to consent to collecting their biometrics. However, given the country’s hurdles, proffering a solution to the problem should be a walk in the park.
