Miraculous 10-Hour Surgery: Dubai Worker’s Severed Hand Successfully Reattached

Dubai Doctors successfully reattached a worker’s severed hand at NMC Royal Hospital following a work-related accident. On February 26, Pyae Phyo Aung, a 37-year-old laborer from Myanmar, was working on a heavy shipment at Dubai Ports. Unfortunately, his left hand got caught in ropes used to moor the boat. Due to the force exerted by the ropes, his hand detached from his wrist and was hanging by only a small piece of skin.

Dubai Ambulance paramedics quickly rushed Mr. Pyae to NMC Royal Hospital in Dubai. There, a team of Dubai doctors and nurses was able to save his hand. Dr. Adil Ali, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the hospital, explained to both the patient and his company managers that immediate reattachment of the hand was necessary. They performed the procedure under general anesthesia. According to him, the man was in critical condition and had lost considerable blood upon arrival at the hospital.

A team member, Dr. Vikas Verma, who specializes in reconstructive surgery, explained that the severed bones, arteries, veins, and tendons required reattachment. According to him, only highly experienced surgeons skilled in managing microvascular hand injuries can carry out the intricate and time-consuming procedure.

Dubai Doctors’ 10-Hour Surgery That Defied All Odds

Dr. Ali and the plastic and reconstructive surgery team worked for over 10 hours to restore blood flow to the amputated hand. They accomplished this by reconnecting arteries, veins, and tendons. The orthopedic team, led by Dr. Mohammed Selim, concentrated on rebuilding the separated bones.

Dr. Surjya Upadhyay, who is in charge of anaesthesiology and pain management, reported that Mr. Pyae had received four more surgeries in March. According to Dr. Upadhyay, the surgeries focused on restoring hand function and movement through tendon transfers, nerve repair, and skin repair. They closely monitored the patient to avoid any complications following the procedure.

As stated by Dr. Mohammed, after receiving physiotherapy and occupational therapy, Mr. Pyae should be able to regain almost full hand function. According to Dr. Mohammed, it may take six to twelve months for nerves and bones to fully recover. According to him, the patient still has a lot of work ahead to fully recover the function and movement of his hand. However, it is probable that the patient will be able to go back to work.

Mr. Pyae, who has been working in the UAE for eighteen months, thanked the medical professionals for saving his hand. He stated that he and his family will forever appreciate the doctors and nurses at the hospital. According to him, he is the sole provider for his family, which includes his mother, wife, and three-year-old daughter residing in Myanmar. He has not been able to meet them since he started working in the UAE. In March, he was released from the hospital and returned to his home country.

Takeaways

The successful reattachment of Pyae Phyo Aung’s hand by Dubai doctors at NMC Royal Hospital is a remarkable feat. This miraculous surgery stands as a testament to the skill and expertise of Dubai doctors and their commitment to saving lives.
