Abu Dhabi is taking another major step toward preserving and promoting its cultural identity from an early age. The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has announced that 11 private nurseries across the emirate have begun implementing the ‘Al Saf Al Emarati’ (The Emirati Classroom) program a pioneering initiative that immerses young children in Emirati culture, language, and values.
The program offers a rich, heritage-based learning experience designed for children aged two to four. It aims to strengthen their sense of national identity and belonging while laying a strong foundation in the Arabic language. Led by Emirati educators, each classroom integrates cultural traditions into everyday lessons through storytelling, heritage-inspired activities, traditional proverbs, and Emirati poetry.
Building Identity Through Language and Culture
According to ADEK, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that children in their formative years grow up with a deep appreciation for the UAE’s heritage and values. “We are creating a learning environment that enables children to build a strong foundation in the Arabic language while enhancing their sense of identity and belonging to the community,” said Maryam Al Hallami, Executive Director of the Early Childhood Education Sector at ADEK.
She added that the program also contributes to national capacity-building by opening meaningful career opportunities for passionate Emirati educators eager to play a leading role in early childhood education.
Expanding Cultural Awareness Across Communities
While the program primarily targets Emirati children, enrollment is open to both Emirati and non-Emirati families who wish to immerse their children in an authentic Arabic and cultural experience. So far, more than 21% of participating families are non-Emirati, reflecting growing interest among expatriate communities in understanding and engaging with Emirati culture and values.
ADEK revealed that interest in the initiative is expanding, with several nurseries expressing a desire to adopt the program during the current academic year. Parents are encouraged to inquire whether their local nursery offers the Al Saf Al Emarati program or request its inclusion to ensure early exposure to the UAE’s cultural heritage.
Setting Standards for Participation
To qualify, nurseries must employ at least two Emirati teachers and present a detailed curriculum plan demonstrating how they will provide a nurturing, resource-rich environment for Arabic language development. Each Al Saf Al Emarati classroom is supervised by Emirati educators who seamlessly weave elements of national heritage into lessons, making Arabic not just a subject but a core pillar of identity, pride, and community connection.
