Abu Dhabi Achieves 95% Cut in Plastic Bag Use Within One Year

Abu Dhabi: The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced a significant environmental achievement, confirming a 95% reduction in plastic bag usage across the emirate since the implementation of its single-use plastic bag policy.

The policy, introduced on 1 June 2022, has led to a remarkable decline in plastic dependency and reflects both strong community cooperation and increasing awareness of sustainability issues. According to EAD, the milestone not only represents a major success but also sets the stage for broader collective action to curb plastic pollution.

172 Million Bags Prevented

In its first year, the ban kept an estimated 172 million single-use plastic bags from entering the environment. On average, Abu Dhabi saw a reduction of 450,000 bags per day, marking one of the most impactful environmental interventions in the region.

This initiative forms part of the emirate’s wider 2022 Single-Use Plastic Policy, which aims to cut down reliance on disposable plastics while promoting recycling and sustainable practices.

Community at the Core

EAD has emphasized that public cooperation was key to the policy’s success. To build on this momentum, the agency has launched a public opinion survey that will run until 12 October. The survey seeks to measure awareness levels, assess challenges faced by residents, and identify the motivations that drive individuals to choose reusable alternatives.

Officials explained that the results will help guide future awareness campaigns and policy measures, ensuring that sustainability goals remain aligned with community needs.

Why It Matters

The plastic bag ban has direct benefits for human health, wildlife, and the environment. Reducing waste helps prevent clogged waterways, protects marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and curbs the harmful effects of plastic pollution on daily life.

By encouraging reusable solutions, Abu Dhabi is not only reducing waste but also paving the way toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for the UAE and the wider region.
