For many people who stutter, simple everyday interactions from ordering coffee to speaking in meetings can be daunting experiences. Recognising these challenges, Abu Dhabi has launched a powerful community initiative designed to help individuals who stutter build confidence, improve communication skills, and find their voice.
The programme, titled ‘From Stutter to Confidence,’ is spearheaded by the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an as part of its ongoing mission to foster inclusion and empower all segments of society.
“Stuttering presents both personal and social challenges, affecting how some members of the Abu Dhabi community express themselves and connect with others,” said Amna Al Zaabi, Contribution Management Division Director – Fundraising Department at Ma’an.
Marking International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) on October 22, Al Zaabi highlighted the importance of raising awareness around this often-misunderstood speech disorder, which affects roughly 1% of the global population.
Promoting Awareness and Inclusion
ISAD serves as a reminder of the need for empathy and understanding toward individuals who stutter. The day aims to educate the public, promote early intervention in children, and encourage research and community-based support for those affected.
“Creating an environment where individuals who stutter feel welcomed and able to express themselves comfortably is crucial,” Al Zaabi said. “With the right support, they can overcome obstacles, build self-assurance, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.”
From Therapy to Transformation
Launched in 2024, the From Stutter to Confidence programme offers customised training and rehabilitation sessions focused on developing speech fluency, interpersonal communication, and self-esteem. The approach integrates psychological and practical elements to help participants thrive both socially and professionally.
“The programme provides a comprehensive framework for communication development, addressing the unique challenges faced by those who stutter,” Al Zaabi added.
A Call for Community Support
Ma’an is encouraging residents, companies, and organisations to contribute to such life-changing initiatives through its official social contribution platform.
“Through initiatives like this, Ma’an reinforces Abu Dhabi’s vision of a cohesive, compassionate, and inclusive society, aligned with the emirate’s broader social development goals,” Al Zaabi said.
As Abu Dhabi continues to champion social inclusion, programmes like From Stutter to Confidence stand as a testament to the emirate’s commitment to ensuring every individual regardless of ability has the opportunity to be heard.
