Al Khaznah Leathers and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City Collaborate to Support Young Burn Survivors

Al Khaznah Leathers (AKL), founded in 2003 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan and recognized as a pioneer in sustainable leather manufacturing, has launched a heartfelt initiative in collaboration with Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), a flagship hospital in the UAE for serious and complex care and a subsidiary of the PureHealth group. Aligned with the Year of Community, the initiative presents handcrafted camel leather turtle toys to paediatric burn patients—offering not just a toy, but a symbol of hope, strength, and the inspiring journey of healing.

The hawksbill turtle, revered in Emirati culture as a symbol of resilience and perseverance, represents the spirit of young survivors who overcome adversity and emerge stronger. These handcrafted camel leather turtles reflect each child’s courageous journey through recovery and reintegration.

“Each turtle is more than a gift—it is a message of strength, a reminder that no matter the struggles we face, there is always hope on the horizon,” said Shamsa Muaid Al Ahbabi, Managing Director and CEO of Al Khaznah Leathers. “We want every child to feel seen, supported, and part of a larger story of survival and renewal.”

In conjunction with this collaboration, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) has announced the launch of the Paediatric Burn Survivorship Programme, marking a major step forward in the long-term care of young burn patients. The programme is dedicated to children under the age of 18 who have been discharged from the Burn Centre and seek support in reintegrating into their communities.

Commenting on the new programme, Dr. Marwan Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer at SSMC, said: “Our mission at SSMC is to transform the way we support our patients through the entire recovery journey. Our new Paediatric Burns Survivorship Programme exemplifies our commitment to providing comprehensive, patient-centred care that address physical, emotional, and social well-being at all stages of recovery.

“To foster a sense of community and acceptance, the programme creates a safe and supportive environment where paediatric burn survivors can share their stories and experiences. Together, with our partners, we ensure that every child can rebuild their life with resilience and renewed hope, setting new standards in holistic rehabilitation.”

SSMC’s Burn Centre is already designated as a Centre of Excellence for burns care by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi.

Building on this strong foundation, the new programme marks a significant evolution beyond clinical treatment, offering a holistic approach that integrates physical rehabilitation with emotional support, community engagement, and skill-building, empowering young survivors to regain confidence and thrive beyond their injuries. The programme will be offered to patients for as long as they need, and participation is entirely voluntary.

Unlike traditional rehabilitation efforts, the survivorship programme places emphasis on peer support, educational activities, sports, and social engagement for paediatric burn survivors. It provides a safe place for children to share their experiences, develop coping skills, and build a positive self-image alongside peers who understand their journey. The programme is designed to support each child and their families for as long as they need, offering ongoing assistance tailored to their individual recovery and integration journeys.
