All you need to know about Saudi gamers and what they are up to

When it comes to gaming, 13% of Saudi residents say they spend most of their time playing video games on a gaming console, PC, smartphone or any other handheld device.

This is a telling statistic from the latest YouGov survey titled ‘The Saudi gamer chronicles’ that highlights the vibrant gaming community in Saudi Arabia, with digital technology blending with Arabian cultural traditions.

The YouGov study was conducted online in August 2023 with a representative sample of 1,006 adults in Saudi Arabia aged 18+, using a questionnaire designed by the UK-based online research data and analytics technology group.

The survey confirms that gaming is speeding to the forefront of entertainment in Saudi Arabia while providing a deeper understanding of Saudi gamers’ habits.

The YouGov research sheds light on their weekly gaming hours, preferred gaming devices, and diverse media interests.

Weekly gaming trend

Saudis exhibit balanced playtime habits in weekly gaming hours, most dedicating 2 to 6 hours weekly.

On average, 11% spend 1 hour, 20% spend 2 hours, 33% spend 3-6 hours, 8% spend 7-10 hours, 6% spend 11-20 hours, 3% spend 21-40 hours, and 4% spend more than 40 hours gaming a week.

Default device

Regarding device of choice, Saudi gamers embrace various digital devices to pursue mobile accessibility and immersive experiences.

In this context, 73% use smartphones, 34% use game consoles, 33% use desktops/laptops, 14% use high-end gaming PCs, 25% use tablets, 9% use VR headsets, and 6% use customised high-end gaming PCs.

Allied activities

Saudi gamers’ other media and entertainment profiles indicate a well-rounded media consumption pattern. While they engage actively in gaming, they enjoy traditional live TV the most.

Thus, 57% watch live TV, 49% engage with social media, 45% watch non-live video content on YouTube, Vimeo, etc., 45% engage with video streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, etc., and 39% engage with other internet modes such as visiting websites, email, etc.

The global gaming market was estimated to reach $217.06 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach $242.39 billion in 2023.

The global gaming market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.4% from 2023 to 2030 to reach $583.69 billion by 2030.
