Dana Gas Signs Landmark MoU to Redevelop Major Gas Fields in Syria, Including Abu Rabah

Dana Gas has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC) to explore the redevelopment and expansion of several key gas fields in central Syria  including the Abu Rabah field, one of the country’s largest.

The agreement marks a significant milestone, positioning Dana Gas as the first international company to partner with Syria’s national petroleum firm in recent years. It represents an important step in rebuilding Syria’s energy infrastructure, which has suffered from prolonged underinvestment and conflict-related disruptions.

Strengthening Syria’s Energy Independence

Under the MoU, Dana Gas will carry out a comprehensive technical evaluation of the designated fields and develop a roadmap to increase natural gas output. The initiative aims to boost Syria’s domestic production capacity and support power generation across the country.

If the assessment leads to a final agreement, the redevelopment could play a central role in restoring energy supply and reducing Syria’s dependence on imported fuels. The Abu Rabah field, discovered in the early 2000s, is regarded as one of Syria’s most promising gas assets.

Richard Hall, CEO of Dana Gas, described the signing as a strategic milestone in regional energy recovery.

“This agreement marks an important first step in evaluating opportunities to redevelop Syria’s gas infrastructure and unlock the potential that exists within its gas sector,” Hall said. “The fields identified under this MoU could make a real difference to domestic gas production, strengthening Syria’s energy security and supporting local communities.”

Regional Expertise and Future Outlook

Dana Gas plans to leverage its operational success from the KM250 expansion project in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The company says its experience in cost management, project delivery, and technical execution can be directly applied to the Syrian redevelopment plan.

At this stage, the MoU focuses solely on feasibility studies and technical assessments, with no immediate commitment to production. However, if the project advances, it could significantly enhance Syria’s natural gas supply, stimulate local economic growth, and signal a wider trend toward regional cooperation in rebuilding energy infrastructure.
