Disney has revealed a historic first for its upcoming Middle East theme park water will be incorporated directly into the design of its iconic castle.

Planned for Yas Island, Disneyland Abu Dhabi will merge Disney’s storytelling with the cultural heritage and coastal identity of the UAE capital. This marks the first time water has ever been part of a Disney castle’s architecture.

A Global First for Disney

In Disney’s We Call It Imagineering YouTube series, Zach Riddley, Senior Vice President of Global Creative Strategy at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained the inspiration.

“One of the first decisions we made was to create a castle park here, a park based on our Magic Kingdom style of storytelling,” he said. “Abu Dhabi is a city on the water, and we’re really excited about incorporating water for the first time in the design of one of our castles.”

Although the specific theme of the castle remains under wraps, fans worldwide are already speculating which character or story could serve as its inspiration.

Distinctly Emirati, Authentically Disney

Disney CEO Bob Iger has described the park as “authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati.” The project is expected to follow the model of Shanghai Disneyland, which balanced Disney’s magic with local culture.

Visitors can also expect comfort year-round, with climate-controlled rides, shaded walkways, and indoor attractions designed to withstand the region’s summer heat.

Yas Island and Opening Timeline

Located 20 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi and less than an hour from Dubai, Yas Island already hosts Ferrari World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and Warner Bros. World. Disneyland will further strengthen its reputation as a global entertainment hub.

While Disney has not set an opening date, Chairman of Disney Experiences Josh D’Amaro suggested that such projects typically take up to eight years. If progress remains steady, Disneyland Abu Dhabi could welcome its first visitors by 2032 or 2033.
