Dubai hotels are cheaper than Airbnb for travellers
Global study looks at hotel versus Airbnb costs
A new study conducted by Highland Cabinetry offers an in-depth look at how hotel prices compare to Airbnb costs in 55 of the world’s largest tourist capitals.
The analysis provides valuable insights for travellers who want to make informed accommodation choices. By comparing average hotel prices for a one-night stay and a whole week against Airbnb rates, the study highlights where booking a hotel can lead to substantial savings.
Istanbul leads in savings
Istanbul, Turkey, emerges as the most favourable city for hotel stays, with a weekly saving of $1,490 compared to Airbnb. The study shows that the average hotel price for a week in Istanbul is just $344, while Airbnb accommodations cost $1,834 for the same duration. This significant difference is due to the relatively low cost of hotels, with over 7,000 options available for tourists. On the other hand, Airbnb averages $262 per night, making it a far more expensive choice for visitors.
Las Vegas and Amsterdam are close behind
Las Vegas ranks second in the study, with travellers saving $1,474 a week by opting for a hotel over Airbnb. While the average price for a hotel in Las Vegas is $96 per night, Airbnb rentals cost $307 nightly, marking a substantial discrepancy. With 375 hotels in the city, Las Vegas offers a range of budget and luxury options, making it one of the most affordable destinations for hotel stays among major tourist cities.
Amsterdam, Netherlands, takes the third spot. Hotel rooms average $131 per night, compared to $287 for an Airbnb. The price difference in Amsterdam totals $1,093 per week. The city boasts 1,336 hotels, making it the second-highest city in terms of hotels per capita among the top 10 cities in the study. These factors contribute to hotels offering significantly better value than Airbnb.
Sydney, Paris, and Dubai, among other top cities
Sydney, Australia, also stands out for its affordable hotel options. The average nightly rate for a hotel in Sydney is $96, compared to $247 for Airbnb, allowing travellers to save $1,056 per week. The city is ranked fourth overall, with 552 hotels providing ample accommodation choices for visitors.
In Paris, where tourism continues to thrive, hotel rates are significantly more affordable than Airbnb, with a difference of $995 in savings. With 2,731 hotels in the French capital, the average nightly hotel price is $126, while Airbnb rooms cost $268 per night. The high density of hotels in Paris, 130.8 hotels per 100,000 residents, also makes it one of the most accessible cities for finding budget-friendly accommodations.
Dubai ranks sixth in savings, with $961 saved weekly by staying in hotels instead of using Airbnb. The average hotel cost in Dubai is just $71 per night, compared to $208 for Airbnb. Despite having fewer hotels than Paris, Dubai’s more affordable options make it an attractive destination for budget-conscious tourists.
Other affordable cities for hotel stays
Miami, United States, has the highest average hotel price in the study, at $152 per night. Despite this, the city offers a savings of $887 per week compared to Airbnb, where rentals cost an average of $279 per night.
In Turkey’s Antalya, tourists can save $828 weekly by choosing a hotel over Airbnb. With an average price of $46 per night for a hotel, Antalya provides one of the most budget-friendly hotel options on the list, with a growing tourism market that saw a 29% increase in international visitors in the past year.
Tokyo, Japan, comes in ninth, where travellers save $826 per week by staying in hotels. The city boasts the lowest hotel price on the list, averaging only $42 per night, while Airbnb costs $160 nightly. With over 2,900 hotels in the city, Tokyo is another top destination for affordable hotel stays.
Finally, Hamburg, Germany, rounds out the top 10 with weekly savings of $794. Hotel prices in Hamburg average $82 per night, while Airbnb costs $195, making it an excellent option for travellers seeking to minimise accommodation expenses.
Conclusion
The study illuminates how travellers can make smarter accommodation choices by comparing hotel prices to Airbnb in major tourist cities. While Airbnb can be a great option in some places, cities like Istanbul, Las Vegas, and Amsterdam offer substantial savings by sticking to hotels. The analysis underscores the importance of determining price and availability when choosing where to stay on your next trip.
