Dubai’s RTA reveals AED1.1 billion deal for 636 new buses
Including 40 electric buses
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an AED1.1 billion contract with suppliers for 636 new buses to strengthen the emirate’s public bus transport network.
The vehicles will be delivered between 2024 and 2025, reinforcing Dubai’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art transportation solutions in preparation for upcoming global events and alignment with the Dubai Urban Plan 2040.
The deal, which encompasses 40 electric buses, includes buses that meet Euro 6 carbon emissions standards and have innovative features such as low floors for enhanced accessibility, special seating for children, and provisions for people of determination.
The comprehensive public bus fleet includes 146 articulated and double-decker buses tailored for high-density areas alongside 450 city service buses.
The contract also emphasises technological advancements, featuring buses equipped with innovative systems such as Driver Behaviour Monitoring and Automated Passenger Counting, which enhance safety and operational efficiency. Moreover, the buses will contribute to Dubai’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 as part of the Public Transport Zero Emissions in Dubai 2050 Strategy.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at Dubai’s RTA underscored the strategic importance of this investment: “This procurement aligns with our vision to elevate Dubai’s public transport system to international benchmarks.
“Introducing these buses aims to make public transport the preferred mode of mobility for residents, supporting our goal to achieve a 25% share in public transport journeys by 2030.”
Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency affiliated with Dubai’s RTA, highlighted the buses’ advanced specifications: “These buses are equipped with the latest amenities, including Wi-Fi, mobile phone charging points, and intelligent systems to ensure superior passenger experience. They represent a milestone in our efforts to set new comfort, safety, and sustainability standards.”
The procurement process adhered to rigorous standards, ensuring the selected suppliers met global manufacturing and maintenance criteria. This approach aims to enhance financial and environmental sustainability across Dubai’s public transport network.
