Dubai Airports has urged passengers to plan ahead as Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) prepare for one of the busiest travel periods ever recorded. More than 10 million passengers are expected to pass through DXB between November 27 and December 31, marking a strong finish to the year.
Peak travel days identified
The surge begins this weekend with the UAE National Day holiday, where daily passenger traffic is expected to pass 294,000. Numbers will continue to climb through December, crossing 300,000 on several days.
Saturday, December 20, is set to be the busiest day of the entire period, with an estimated 303,000 travellers.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said the expected movement reflects Dubai’s growing global influence. “This season is a powerful indicator of Dubai’s international appeal. Our teams are fully prepared to ensure a smooth experience throughout the festive period,” he said.
December expected to break records
Airport forecasts show that December could become DXB’s busiest month ever, with more than 8.7 million passengers expected. Travel patterns will follow familiar trends: outbound traffic spikes ahead of the National Day break, followed by strong inbound arrivals from mid-December as visitors flock to Dubai’s winter attractions and events.
Griffiths has also highlighted that DXB’s growth mirrors Dubai’s wider tourism and business ambitions. “DXB continues to be the gateway to one of the world’s most dynamic cities,” he noted.
Smart travel tools at the centre of operations
To manage the rush, Dubai Airports is focusing on smart technology, quicker processing, and enhanced coordination with Emirates. Passengers are encouraged to take advantage of:
- Home, early, and self-service check-in options
- City check-in at ICD Brookfield Place in DIFC
- Smart Gates for faster passport control (ages 12+)
- The “Red Carpet” Smart Tunnel for document-free clearance for Emirates First and Business Class travellers
- Dubai Metro access to Terminals 1 and 3, with extended peak-hour services
- Dedicated accessibility routes and lounges for People of Determination
Real-time flight information, gate updates, and wayfinding are available through DXB Express Maps and mobile alerts.
Looking ahead: Expansion and future capacity
The year-end projections come as Dubai pushes ahead with long-term plans to expand capacity and strengthen the emirate’s position as the world’s busiest international hub.
“Infrastructure upgrades, digital transformation, and a stronger customer experience will drive the next phase of our growth,” Griffiths said, adding that momentum built this year sets the stage for a stronger 2026.
Aviation analyst Saj Ahmad of StrategicAero Research said the latest numbers underscore the urgency of accelerating development at Al Maktoum International / Dubai World Central, expected to become the main hub by 2032.
“With Emirates and flydubai expecting over 500 new aircraft in the coming years, DWC is the only gateway capable of supporting their long-term growth,” he noted.
