China’s leading EV manufacturers unveil unique models at Shanghai Auto Show 2025

Aiming for global sales

The 2025 Shanghai Auto Show is serving as a global stage for China’s top electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, who are showcasing their latest innovations in automotive technology at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai, from April 23 to May 2, 2025.

BYD, NIO, XPeng, Li Auto, and Leapmotor lead the charge, unveiling models that push the boundaries of design, performance, and sustainability.

BYD’s diverse EV lineup

BYD continues solidifying its position as the global EV leader by introducing several new models. The Seal 06, a mid-size sedan, features BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo and offers a range of 470 to 545 km, catering to the growing demand for stylish and efficient electric sedans.

The Sealion 06 SUV, built on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo, also presents electric and plug-in hybrid options that appeal to a broad spectrum of consumers seeking versatility and performance. For those seeking a sportier experience, BYD has unveiled an unnamed electric sports car that competes with global legacy internal combustion engine (ICE) models, such as the Porsche 911, reflecting the company’s ambition to enter the high-performance electric vehicle (EV) market.

NIO’s strategic brand expansion

NIO is expanding its brand portfolio with the introduction of Firefly, a new sub-brand targeting the European market. The first model under this brand, an electric small car, is set to launch in Europe in the first half of 2025.

This move underscores NIO’s commitment to global expansion and its strategy for catering to diverse market segments. In addition, NIO continues to enhance its existing lineup with advanced features and design improvements, maintaining its reputation for producing premium electric vehicles.

XPeng’s technological advancements

XPeng introduced the P7+, described as “the world’s first AI vehicle.” Priced from 209,800 yuan (approximately $29,600), the P7+ integrates advanced AI capabilities, setting a new benchmark for intelligent driving experiences.

Additionally, XPeng has unveiled the G6 SUV, which features an updated Turing AI system and ultra-fast charging capabilities, allowing for a 10-80% charge in just 12 minutes. These innovations highlight XPeng’s commitment to leading in autonomous driving technology and charging efficiency.

Li Auto’s strategic focus

Li Auto continues to focus on its extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology, offering models that combine the benefits of electric driving with the convenience of an ICE engine. While specific new models were not unveiled at the ongoing Shanghai Auto Show, Li Auto’s strategic direction emphasises the development of EREV systems that cater to consumers seeking long-range capabilities without compromising on environmental benefits.

Leapmotor’s entry into the European market

Leapmotor, in collaboration with Stellantis, introduced the B10 model, a compact electric SUV that will be manufactured in Poland for European consumers. This move marks Leapmotor’s entry into the European market, with plans to establish a significant presence and have 500 sales points by the end of 2025. The B10’s introduction reflects the growing competition among Chinese automakers in the global EV market.

Global implications and market dynamics

The 2025 Shanghai Auto Show underscores China’s dominance in the global electric vehicle (EV) market, with domestic manufacturers leading in innovation and production capacity.

However, the introduction of tariffs by the European Union and the United States on Chinese-made EVs has prompted these manufacturers to adapt their strategies, including targeting the oil-rich Arabian Gulf countries, such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Some companies are also considering manufacturing vehicles in Europe to circumvent these tariffs, while others are focusing on enhancing the competitiveness of their products to maintain market share. Despite these challenges, Chinese EV manufacturers remain resilient, leveraging technological advancements and strategic partnerships to continue expanding globally.
