Five Ways to Stay Cool and Healthy this Summer

With summer now upon us and temperatures rising across the GCC, knowing how to stay safe and healthy is important for everyone of all ages. It is even more vital given the effects posed by climate change, which continues to be a pressing topic around the world.

St. George’s University, School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, has shared five essential and practical tips to help you be well-prepared during this hot period of the year.

  1. Be indoors and avoid heat-related symptoms

Try to be inside a cool or air-conditioned environment for as long as possible. This will help you avoid exhaustion, nausea, headaches, dizziness, and muscle cramps – symptoms caused by the scorching outdoor heat. If you do need to go outdoors, hydrate regularly, and also blot your skin with cool water to help lower your body temperature.

  1. Hydrate yourself regularly

Carry a bottle of water whenever you step outside and take regular sips to not only hydrate your body but also replace the water lost through sweating. Aim to drink quantities of eight to 12 glasses of water every day to keep your concentration levels high. If you want to taste different flavors, you can always add lime slices or fresh fruits to your water.

  1. Eat more fruits and vegetables

Focus on consuming cooler foods such as watermelons, cucumbers, oranges, and berries. These products are rich in essential vitamins and minerals and can help you stay hydrated and refreshed. You should also load up on leafy greens such as spinach, kale and lettuce, which are packed with vitamins and minerals.

  1. Plan your workouts ahead

High temperatures can place extra stress on the heart and muscles during physical activity. Schedule outdoor workouts during cooler parts of the day, ideally early morning or after sunset. Wear light-colored, breathable fabrics and avoid high-intensity workouts when it’s excessively hot. Alternatively, switch to swimming, indoor yoga, or strength training in an air-conditioned gym.

  1. Prepare for summer travel with health in mind

If you are traveling abroad for your vacation, take time to research the weather in advance and pack accordingly. Along with light, breathable clothing, consider bringing essentials like a reusable water bottle, sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and electrolyte sachets to help replenish vital minerals and stay energized.

As the climate continues to change, adapting your daily habits is key to protecting your health. Staying hydrated, being sun-smart, and listening to your body are small but powerful steps that can make a big difference. SGU encourages everyone to take consistent precautions to enjoy a healthy and active summer, wherever you are.
