INEOS Automotive wheels out the all-new Fusilier 4×4

Made in Austria vehicle comes in two powertrains

INEOS Automotive, a prominent player in the automotive industry, has officially revealed its latest 4×4 model, the INEOS Fusilier. The launch comes on the heels of the company’s commitment to a zero-emission model line, announced in May 2022.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Chair and CEO of INEOS, introduced the all-new vehicle in a grand unveiling event in London on February 23, 2024.

The INEOS Fusilier boasts world-class off-road capability without compromising on-road performance. It offers consumers zero and low-emission options, aligning with the global push towards sustainable transportation.

In addition to the previously announced all-electric powertrain (BEV), Ratcliffe confirmed the development of a low-emission range-extender electric option.

Dual purpose

This innovative approach aims to cater to a broader range of consumer needs while championing the cause of decarbonisation.

The range extender integrates a small petrol engine powering a generator, ensuring the battery maintains its charge when external charging is not readily available.

Details about the alternative powertrain and launch timings are anticipated by Q3 2024.

Ratcliffe said: “As we developed this vehicle, we quickly concluded that to move towards decarbonisation but continue making cars that consumers want to drive, we need a mix of powertrain technologies.

“BEVs are perfect for certain uses: shorter trips and urban deliveries, but industry and governments need to have realistic expectations around other technologies that can help accelerate the necessary pace of change.”

The INEOS Fusilier is a result of collaboration with Magna, a leading automotive supplier.

Made in Austria

Magna will manufacture the vehicle at its state-of-the-art facility in Graz, Austria.

Building on the Grenadier’s DNA with a modern twist and distinctive identity, the 4X4 will have slightly reduced length and height.

It will be constructed on a customised skateboard platform with a steel top hat and underbody, complemented by aluminium doors and closures.

INEOS and Magna’s partnership has previously yielded successful results with developing the Grenadier station wagon and Quartermaster pick-up.

Magna, a major player in automotive manufacturing, produces conventional ICE, hybrid, and electric vehicles for various automakers.

The INEOS Fusilier will undergo extensive testing on Austria’s Schöckl mountain, near Magna’s assembly facility in Graz.

In a move emphasising their commitment to future decarbonisation, INEOS Automotive unveiled the Grenadier Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Demonstrator at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2023.

This demonstrator showcases the readiness of hydrogen-powered 4X4 technology for production, although its commercial viability hinges on establishing a robust refuelling infrastructure.

Lynn Calder, CEO of INEOS Automotive, expressed her enthusiasm, saying: “Announcing our third model line is another significant milestone for INEOS Automotive, cementing our intent as an automotive manufacturer – like our full vehicle lineup, we are here for the long haul.”

Good to know features of the INEOS Fusilier:

  • Design and engineering direction to appeal to those who seek a modern classic with serious off-road capability.
  • Updating the archetypal 4X4 for an electrified powertrain to minimise drag without impacting the functional design sees a smoothing of body lines and a more athletic style.
  • Chamfered edges and corners assist with uninterrupted airflow and maintaining that crucial unobstructed visibility over the road and terrain ahead.
  • Exterior functional features have been cleverly incorporated into the bodywork for a more stylised appeal. There when needed, out of sight when you do not.
  • Active grille shutters have been introduced to manage airflow at the front of the vehicle depending on its cooling or range-efficiency requirements, opening and closing automatically as required.
  • Extensive use of flushed glazing and the integration of secondary features such as the side steps, boxed wheel arches, and skid plates create a cohesive look, hinting at its dual-purpose functionality while maximising aerodynamics.
  • Familial style aspects seen on the Grenadier and Quartermaster include 7-inch circular all-LED lighting front and rear, symbolising the strength of a steel tube running fore and aft, a visible B-pillar between the doors and a 4-way roof strengthening structure.
  • Door hinges are on-show, now recessed for airflow and the wide horizontal front grille features twin LED working lamps for maximum illumination – integrated within a streamlined surround.
