Lufthansa Group achieves 25% female representation in management positions

Meeting key IATA initiative
Lufthansa Group has met the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) ’25by2025′ initiative by increasing the proportion of female managers to over 25% across its top three management levels.
In the first quarter of 2025, the Lufthansa Group reached a significant milestone by ensuring that over a quarter of managers in the top three management levels are female.
This achievement aligns with the goals set by IATA’s ’25by2025′ initiative, which aims to enhance diversity, equality, and inclusion within the aviation industry. Over 200 aviation companies worldwide have committed to this target.
Michael Niggemann, Chief Human Resources Officer and Member of Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s executive board, said, “We are delighted to have increased the proportion of women in management positions across the Group to over 25 percent.
“Admittedly, this is still too little—the steps are sometimes small and somewhat laborious, but that is precisely why they are critical and necessary. The goal is and remains sustainable development without gender discrimination.”
To further promote gender equality, the Lufthansa Group has implemented various measures, including talent promotion programs and guidelines to enhance the visibility of female candidates during recruitment.
These initiatives aim to fully harness the potential of talented junior staff and continue progressing towards a more balanced representation in management positions.
Despite the progress, the Lufthansa Group acknowledges that there is still work to be done. The company has voluntarily set a target to achieve a 30% share of women at management levels by 2025. This goal is part of a comprehensive approach to diversity, recognising that a diverse workforce strengthens the company’s competitive position.
The aviation industry continues to make strides in improving gender diversity. Approximately 6% of the Lufthansa Group’s pilots are female, and their share has steadily increased over the past few years.
Additionally, about 80% of the cabin crew are female. These figures highlight the industry’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in various roles.
The Lufthansa Group’s achievement of over 25% female representation in management positions marks a significant step towards greater gender equality in the aviation sector. The company’s continued commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident through its ongoing initiatives and future goals, contributing to a more equitable and dynamic industry.
