NASA Elevates David Salvagnini To Chief AI Officer

In a strategic move to harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson announced on May 13, 2024, the appointment of David Salvagnini as the agency’s new chief AI officer, effective immediately.

Salvagnini, formerly NASA’s chief data officer, is pivotal in shaping the agency’s AI strategy and initiatives, driving innovation, and ensuring responsible use of AI technologies across NASA’s vast spectrum of missions and projects.

Nelson stressed NASA’s long-standing commitment to responsible AI usage: “Artificial Intelligence has been a cornerstone of NASA’s operations for decades, and its potential to accelerate scientific discovery is immense.

“As we embark on this new era of AI-driven exploration, it is imperative that we uphold the highest standards of responsible AI usage.”

In his new role, David Salvagnini will lead NASA’s efforts in charting the course for ethical and impactful AI deployment, both in space and on Earth, for the betterment of humanity.

Salvagnini’s appointment aligns with US President Joe Biden’s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence, underscoring NASA’s commitment to ensuring the ethical and equitable deployment of AI technologies.

Salvagnini, a highly accomplished technology leader, brings a wealth of experience to his new role as NASA’s chief AI officer.

His distinguished career, spanning over two decades in technology leadership within the intelligence community, is a testament to his capabilities.

Before joining NASA in June 2023, Salvagnini served in various capacities within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, where he played instrumental roles in shaping enterprise-level IT research and development, engineering, and operations initiatives.

His extensive background in data, IT, and AI programs and a decorated 21-year tenure in the United States Air Force positions Salvagnini as a formidable leader poised to advance NASA’s AI agenda.
