Ooredoo Qatar partners with Nokia

To modernise core network

Ooredoo Qatar, a leading telecommunications provider in Qatar with over 3.4 million customers, has selected Nokia to modernise its core network, enabling the operator to deliver more advanced services.

The collaboration will leverage network slicing and integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities to optimise network performance, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

The modernisation effort will support Ooredoo Qatar’s ongoing network evolution, unlocking greater value from its existing network assets. Through innovative business models, Ooredoo will be able to tap into new revenue streams from both the consumer and enterprise sectors.

Sheikh Ali Bin Jabor Al-Thani, Chief Executive Officer of Ooredoo Qatar, commented: “Our vision is to enrich people’s digital lives, and this significant step with Nokia towards a 5G standalone core network aligns with our group-wide initiatives to evolve our network operations. This move will bring new digital capabilities and business models that ultimately enhance the customer and enterprise experience.”

Under the terms of the deal, Ooredoo Qatar will integrate Nokia’s 5G voice core, packet core, and subscriber data management solutions. These will equip Ooredoo Qatar with the tools to offer ultra-low latency bandwidth and multi-access edge computing. These capabilities are essential for enabling real-time industrial automation and high-quality gaming experiences on a large scale.

Nokia’s core solutions will provide the flexibility required for Ooredoo Qatar to operate a multi-vendor network. This will enable the operator to create thousands of virtual networks on a single physical infrastructure. Each “slice” of the network can be tailored to meet the specific needs of different applications, services, and customer segments.

Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Services at Nokia, expressed: “Ooredoo Qatar continues to lead in transforming its network to meet the evolving digital needs of its customers. We are thrilled to strengthen our partnership with Ooredoo by providing flexible 5G standalone Core capabilities to support the operator’s diverse network requirements.”

Additionally, Ooredoo Qatar will deploy Nokia’s MantaRay NM solution, which offers a consolidated and automated network view to optimise network monitoring and management.

The partnership also includes the rollout of Nokia’s Data Centre Fabric solution, which enables seamless scalability, adaptability, and operations within data centres and cloud environments. The 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR) system will be deployed to enhance service efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and increase capacity.
