Rodenstock unveils AI-powered B.I.G. Norm lenses for the Middle East
Result of 500,000+ biometric eye scans
Rodenstock, a global leader in eye health innovation and manufacturer of biometric ophthalmic lenses, has launched its all-new B.I.G. Norm lenses, biometric intelligent glasses powered by artificial intelligence (AI), in the Middle East market.
The regional launch is in partnership with Egma, a leading ophthalmic lens company based in Dubai, UAE.
Regional ophthalmic trade representatives at the launch event, held on August 19, 2024, at the Museum of the Future in Dubai, were told that the new B.I.G. Norm lenses range is the result of more than ten years of research and the analysis of more than 500,000 biometric eye scans, which have culminated in a transformative product lineup that sets a new norm in lens manufacturing.

Highlighting the uniqueness of the B.I.G. Norm lineup as a new level of biometric precision for conventional lenses through the use of AI, Dr Dietmar Uttenweiler, Executive Vice President of Research and Development and Product Management at Rodenstock, stated that the newly introduced range for the Middle East region represents a revolutionary breakthrough in lens manufacturing.
Revolutionary technology
With the introduction of biometric intelligence lenses, Rodenstock has ventured into the anatomy of the eye in ways never explored before, explained Dr Uttenweiler to the attendees at the Dubai launch event.
He added that previously, Rodenstock focused on individual measurements of the face and frame to create high-quality lenses. However, the company has now taken a significant step forward by incorporating biometric eye measurements into the lens design, using correlations between the prescription and eye parameters.
“This advancement allows Rodenstock to offer lenses that are not unique but also highly customised to each individual’s eyesight needs, thanks to more than ten years of R&D and the analysis of more than 500,000 data points, enhanced by advanced AI technology,” said Dr Uttenweiler.
In his address at the launch event, Adib Eghterafi, Chairman of Egma, stressed that the traditional approach to lens manufacturing generally relies on just four standard prescription values, which can overlook the unique biometric characteristics of each eye and are only genuinely fit for 2% of all lens wearers.
Unique personalisation
Eghterafi added that Rodenstock has now redefined lens crafting by incorporating individual biometric data into the lens-making process, offering a level of personalisation never before possible in the new B.I.G. Norm lineup.
Husni Alkhufash, Executive Vice President of Egma, noted in his address at the launch event that Rodenstock’s clinical trials, conducted in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, showed significant improvements in visual quality—sharper, more comfortable vision—when using B.I.G. Norm lenses compared to standard lenses.
Alkhufash added that Egma has begun offering customers in the UAE an online and 24-hour delivery system for Rodenstock lenses.
With the philosophy ‘B.I.G. Vision For All’ and headquartered in Munich, Germany, Rodenstock specialises in producing high-quality ophthalmic lenses.
Founded in 1877, Rodenstock employs 5,100 people worldwide and is represented by sales offices and distribution partners in more than 85 countries. The company maintains production plants at 16 locations in 15 countries.
