SEHA’s Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Demonstrates Expertise in Managing Severe Traumatic Brain Injury with Successful Teenager Recovery

SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, has reported the successful management and recovery of a teenager at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) after a serious traumatic brain injury (TBI). The case highlights the expertise of neurosurgeons at SKMC, supported by intensive care providers who are well trained in managing TBI patients, and underscores SKMC’s commitment to patient-centred, compassionate care for patients and their families.

The young patient sustained a serious head injury after he was thrown from his bike. An initial CT brain scan revealed post-traumatic right subarachnoid and subdural haemorrhage. Due to elevated intracranial pressure and the severity of his condition, he was intubated, sedated, and muscle relaxed.

The following day, he underwent a right fronto-temporoparietal decompressive craniectomy to relieve pressure on the brain. Given the severity of his condition and the associated complications, including of a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and accompanying infections, his case required close monitoring and comprehensive medical management. He subsequently underwent a tracheostomy to provide breathing support, followed by a lumbar drain for his CSF leak. Later, he underwent cranioplasty for the reconstruction of the skull.

With thanks to the professionalism of the SEHA SKMC multidisciplinary intensive care and neurosurgery teams, the patient had an excellent neurologically recovery. His Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score has improved to 11/15, reflecting a notable level of consciousness. he has now become communicative and is ready to begin rehabilitation.

Dr. Musaab Ali Al Ramsi, Chairman, Department of Critical Care Medicine at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, commented: “Treating severe traumatic brain injuries requires a multidisciplinary approach and specialised care. We are pleased with the progress made by our team in managing this complex case, and we remain committed to supporting the patient’s continued recovery and rehabilitation.”

This case highlights SEHA SKMC’s success in providing comprehensive management of critical neurological cases; from an emergency intervention and surgical excellence to a plan for ongoing rehabilitation. SKMC combines the latest medical technologies with caring, patient-centred care to achieve the best possible outcome when caring for patients with life-threatening neurological illnesses.
