Sharjah has taken another major step in advancing astronomy and space science education after the International Astronomical Union signed a cooperation agreement with the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub to establish a regional education centre in the emirate.

The agreement was praised by Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, who described the initiative as a major scientific milestone for both Sharjah and the UAE.

The new centre will operate as part of the IAU’s Office of Astronomy for Education, serving as a regional hub focused on strengthening astronomy and space science education across the Arab world. It aims to support teachers, specialists and students by providing Arabic educational resources, specialised training programmes, and scientific workshops.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed said the centre will enhance Sharjah’s growing reputation as a leading knowledge and science hub, while boosting the emirate’s role in international scientific cooperation. He noted that the partnership reflects the trust global institutions place in Sharjah’s academic and research capabilities.

The centre will also focus on translating and adapting advanced astronomy content into Arabic, helping to enrich scientific knowledge and improve public awareness about space sciences. Officials believe the initiative will inspire future generations to explore scientific innovation and discovery.

The agreement was signed virtually by Dr Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Director of the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub, alongside Dr Diana Worrall and Dr Markus Pössel.

The centre is expected to launch several educational and training initiatives in the coming phase, strengthening regional and global partnerships while supporting STEM education across the Arab region.
