Sharjah: Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL), in partnership with the Universities of Sharjah, Kalba, and Khorfakkan, has launched the Scientific Research Incubator, a new initiative designed to give school students hands-on experience in academic research.
The programme, unveiled during the seventh annual Majors Discipline Exhibition, targets secondary school students from Grades 10 to 12, equipping them with practical research skills in a library setting.
Five Weeks of Immersive Learning
Running until October 5, the initiative engages groups of 20 to 30 students across SPL branches in Kalba, Wadi Al Helo, Khorfakkan, and Dibba Al Hisn. Over five weeks, participants are introduced to the foundations and ethics of research, trained in advanced search techniques using Boolean logic and scholarly databases, and guided on structuring research papers with proper citations.
The curriculum also covers public speaking, presentation skills, and independent learning skills that prepare students for higher education and professional success.
Libraries at the Heart of Research
Eman Bushulaibi, Director of Sharjah Public Libraries, emphasized the central role libraries play in nurturing future researchers.
“Libraries are the natural setting for researchers. Through the Scientific Research Incubator, we are giving students early exposure to academic research tools and fostering confidence that will serve them well in university and beyond,” she said.
Hands-On Training and Competition
Weekly workshops at Kalba and Khorfakkan branches, such as Exploring Scientific Research, Smart Research, and Methods and Ethics, provide direct, interactive training. Sessions on Writing and Referencing teach students how to prepare reports, use citation tools, and present findings effectively.
The programme concludes with a mini research competition. Student projects will be showcased to a judging panel on September 29 and 30 at Kalba Library, before the final round at Khorfakkan Library on October 5. Winners will receive prizes and certificates of participation.
This pioneering initiative reinforces Sharjah’s commitment to empowering youth with the tools of knowledge and innovation, ensuring they are prepared for the academic and professional challenges of the future.
