Space42 and ICEYE partner to build SAR satellites in UAE

Boosting nation’s EO programme

Space42, a UAE-based spacetech company, and ICEYE, a Finland-headquartered global leader in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite operations, have signed a joint venture agreement to manufacture SAR satellites in the UAE.

The venture builds upon the two entities’ collaboration, which included the launch of the UAE’s first SAR satellite, Foresight-1, in August 2024.

The partnership focuses on advancing satellite manufacturing and deploying SAR satellite missions to support the UAE’s Earth Observation (EO) programme that aims to boost the Arabian Gulf country’s satellite remote sensing capabilities, catering to a growing demand for high-resolution imagery and data from SAR satellites. These satellites are crucial for various sectors, such as agriculture, urban planning, and disaster management.

Space42’s new state-of-the-art facilities in Abu Dhabi, which include Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) mission operations centres, will host the joint venture’s manufacturing operations.

The joint venture will also enrich the UAE’s industrial ecosystem. By localising the supply chain, the venture will source components and services from local industrial players and build a strong, self-sustaining SAR ecosystem in the UAE.

The collaboration strengthens ICEYE’s UAE presence while furthering the UAE’s development of SAR and EO capabilities. The venture will also drive technology transfer and knowledge-sharing initiatives, contributing to the UAE’s national R&D efforts for future sovereign SAR payloads.

Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Bayanat Smart Solutions and Space42, noted: “This is a continuation of our strategic partnership with ICEYE. It aligns with Space42’s commitment to unlocking the full potential of both space and ground systems, using AI-enabled solutions to deliver customer value. Moreover, it supports the UAE’s space ambitions by bringing SAR manufacturing to the region, positioning it at the forefront of global space technology advancements.”

Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and Co-founder of ICEYE, highlighted the efficiency gains expected from the joint venture: “Together, Space42 and ICEYE will deploy, manage, and operate SAR constellations more efficiently.

“We are excited to extend our satellite production line to the UAE, enhancing the global reach and positive impact of ICEYE’s technology. This partnership will not only accelerate the UAE space programme but also boost local SAR capabilities, benefiting the people of the UAE.”

The UAE’s SAR constellation will continue to grow over the next three years, further cementing the country’s position as a key player in space technology.
