TII and UAE Space Agency sign quantum communication infrastructure partnership

Safeguarding UAE’s national security

The Abu Dhabi-headquartered Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has partnered with the UAE Space Agency to establish a comprehensive quantum communication infrastructure utilising cutting-edge Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology developed in the UAE.

The proposed QKD infrastructure promises to enhance the UAE’s national security through a defence-in-depth approach, integrating fibre—and space-based quantum networks. It will also solidify the UAE’s position as a global hub for advanced space technology, research, and development.

The initiative, formalised at GITEX Global 2024 in Dubai earlier this week, places the UAE among the few nations investing in virtually unhackable quantum communication technology.

Central to the endeavour is TII’s Abu Dhabi Quantum Optical Ground Station (ADQOGS), the first of its kind in the Arab world and the largest in the MENA region. This facility will advance secure free-space optical communications and link the UAE to a global quantum-secure network. The agreement between TII and the UAE Space Agency also encompasses the construction of a dedicated fibre link connecting ADQOGS to TII’s Quantum Communications facility in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.

Encryption keys

QKD is an advanced method that allows encryption keys—essential for securing communications—to be transmitted using particles of light or photons. By leveraging the principles of quantum physics, QKD ensures that these encryption keys cannot be intercepted or altered, rendering relevant networks virtually unhackable.

Fibre-optic cables are an effective medium for short distances for secure transmissions. However, satellite-based QKD solutions are essential for longer distances, particularly across borders. Facilities like ADQOGS will facilitate these space-based connections, integrating the UAE into a global quantum-secure communication network.

Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, stated: “At the UAE Space Agency, we recognise the critical importance of harnessing advancements such as quantum communications.

“This technology is essential for safeguarding data transfers between satellites and terrestrial command centres. Our partnership with TII reflects our commitment to driving innovation in this vital sector and ensures a more sustainable, secure, and future-proof space communication system.”

He added that the collaboration with TII enhances capabilities in quantum space communications and supports the broader goal of building a knowledge-driven, innovation-based economy in the UAE.

Dr Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, said: “By integrating ground-based and satellite QKD solutions, we are not just advancing quantum communications—we are establishing the UAE as a leader in pioneering a holistic, unhackable quantum communication infrastructure.”

Dr James Grieve, Senior Director at TII’s Quantum Research Center, noted the significance of integrating fibre-based and satellite QKD solutions as a critical advancement in secure communications. “At TII, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of quantum technology, ensuring that the UAE remains at the forefront of encryption techniques impervious to hacking or interception.”
