The UAE has launched a new initiative to develop Emirati artificial intelligence leaders as part of its efforts to accelerate the implementation of the country’s ambitious AI Strategy 2031 and strengthen its position as a global hub for advanced technologies.

The National Experts Programme – AI Track (NEP-AI), which begins this month, is designed to equip Emirati professionals with the expertise needed to integrate AI across government operations and key economic sectors. The programme supports five major priorities of the UAE National AI Strategy 2031, including expanding the country’s global AI leadership, boosting competitiveness through applied AI solutions, accelerating AI adoption in public services, developing national talent, and linking research and infrastructure to practical industry applications.

Participants have been selected from 25 priority sectors and will receive specialised training in AI systems, governance, leadership, and emerging technologies. The programme also includes international study visits, mentorship opportunities, and capstone projects focused on addressing real-world national challenges.

Ahmed Al Shamsi, Director of the National Experts Programme, said the UAE has already established itself as one of the world’s leading AI ecosystems and that the next stage is focused on building deep expertise and long-term leadership capabilities.

He noted that the initiative comes as the UAE advances plans to become the first country to deploy agentic AI models across government systems. Unlike conventional AI tools, agentic AI can independently perform tasks and manage complex processes, making responsible oversight and governance increasingly important.

The selection process involved extensive interviews conducted by AI specialists, National Experts Programme fellows, and alumni to identify candidates with strong leadership potential and a clear understanding of the UAE’s AI ambitions.

Professor Hoda Alkhzaimi, spokesperson for NEP-AI, said candidates consistently demonstrated awareness of the UAE National AI Strategy 2031 and recognised the importance of effective institutional implementation to drive the next phase of AI development.

She added that many applicants showed exceptional ambition and capability to generate value across industries, contribute to global innovation, and enhance the country’s competitiveness.

The launch of NEP-AI builds on the UAE’s growing international recognition for AI readiness, digital infrastructure, and government-led adoption of emerging technologies. Officials said continued investment in talent development and innovation will play a critical role in achieving the nation’s long-term AI goals.
