USAF F-22 Raptors to get advanced infrared threat-detection sensors
Lockheed Martin awarded contract
Lockheed Martin has secured a $270 million contract with the US Air Force to upgrade the F-22 Raptor with cutting-edge infrared defensive sensors. The contract marks a significant step in modernising the advanced stealth fighter to ensure its readiness against evolving threats.
The upgrade involves integrating Lockheed Martin’s new distributed TacIRST (Tactical Infrared Search and Track) sensors, forming part of the aircraft’s Infrared Defensive System (IRDS).
These sensors will improve the F-22’s ability to detect, track, and defeat incoming threats, enhancing survivability and mission effectiveness in complex environments. The new system is designed to boost the aircraft’s capability against current and future adversaries, offering superior situational awareness and greater precision in combat.
In addition to the F-22, Lockheed Martin will support the integration of the IRDS on other military platforms, further extending the benefits of this advanced technology across the US Air Force fleet. This is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to deliver innovative solutions reinforcing the nation’s air dominance and operational flexibility.
Hank Tucker, Vice President of Mission Systems at Lockheed Martin, said: “We recognise the critical need for versatile and powerful infrared systems like IRDS, which ensure the survivability of pilots and the effectiveness of their missions. Our commitment to supporting the Air Force is stronger than ever as we work to outpace evolving threats.”
Justin Taylor, Vice President of Lockheed Martin’s F-22 programme, added, “Lockheed Martin is proud to continue its partnership with the Air Force, advancing the capabilities of the F-22 Raptor. Our focus on fifth-generation aircraft technology will ensure the US maintains air superiority now and in the future.”
This new contract builds on Lockheed Martin’s extensive history of collaboration with the US Air Force, reinforcing its role in strengthening the nation’s defence systems. Integrating advanced technologies like the IRDS is vital in maintaining the US military’s tactical edge in an increasingly complex global security environment.
