Airbus gets Wizz Air order for 75 new A321neo aircraft

Wizz Air, the Budapest-headquartered ultra-low-cost airline, has signed a contract for 75 new Airbus A321neo aircraft, taking its total order for the A320neo family to 434, and for its A320 fleet overall to 565 aircraft.

Neither Wizz Air nor Airbus has disclosed the cost of the contract.

The list price of a new A321neo is in the range of $118-129 million.

Wizz Air is an all-Airbus operator with a fleet of more than 180 A320 single-aisle aircraft currently in operation.

The AA321neo (see hero image) is the most efficient narrow-body aircraft in operation globally, with 239 seats in a single-class configuration.

With a Pratt and Whitney GTF engine, the aircraft delivers the lowest fuel burn per passenger and enables Wizz Air to reduce fuel costs, while delivering the lowest carbon intensity of any major European or Middle Eastern carrier.

The A321neo delivers 30% fuel burn, 50% CO2 saving, and an almost 50% reduction in noise footprint, as compared to the previous generation aircraft.

József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air said: “Wizz Air further reinforces its position as the largest A321neo family operator in Europe and the Middle East. More than half our fleet has already been converted to cutting-edge neo technology.

“The A321neo’s unparalleled economic efficiency and remarkably low carbon footprint underpin our commitment to provide affordable and sustainable travel options for our customers.

“We have enjoyed a longstanding strategic partnership with Airbus and are steadfast in our commitment to this exceptional technology with one of the largest outstanding order books in the world of more than 350 neo aircraft,” Váradi added.

Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, added: “Wizz Air has steadily grown to become a formidable airline in the European skies and a great partner to Airbus. The investment in the A321neo is a solid foundation in Wizz Air’s continued expansion strategy.”

As of July 2023 Wizz Air has carried a total of 6,028,939 passengers via 194 airports in 54 countries, compared to 4,760,725 passengers in 2022.

The airline uses Abu Dhabi International Airport as its main operations hub in the GCC region.

In July 2023, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the ultra-low-fare national carrier of the UAE, launched its passenger flights from Abu Dhabi to Erbil, the Kurdish region in Iraq.
