141 new public bus shelters installed in Dubai

Total of 762 planned by 2025

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has completed 141 new public bus shelters, marking significant progress in its plan to deliver 762 shelters across key locations in the Arabian Gulf emirate by 2025. This project, which is now 40% complete, is expected to be fully realised by the end of 2025.

The new public bus shelters, with their modular designs and user-centric features, aim to enhance the comfort and convenience of public transport users.

Depending on daily usage, the public bus shelters are classified into four categories: primary shelters (over 750 users), secondary shelters (250 to 750 users), basic shelters (100 to 250 users), and drop-off/pick-up shelters (fewer than 100 users).

The public bus shelters are strategically located to serve a broad range of public bus routes in Dubai, with some accommodating over ten routes each. Upon full completion, these shelters will cater to more than 182 million public bus passengers annually, underscoring the importance of public transport in Dubai’s growing urban landscape.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai RTA stated: “This initiative demonstrates our dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Dubai’s residents and visitors by providing a premium, convenient mobility service.”

Al Tayer elaborated on selecting the public bus shelter locations, ensuring they meet the needs of densely populated and key areas while supporting future operational demands. Construction began in areas with existing infrastructure, expediting the rollout and maximising the number of shelters available to commuters.

Plans include installing air-conditioned public bus shelters, shaded outdoor areas, advertising spaces, and information screens displaying public bus network maps, schedules, and headway times.

In line with Dubai’s commitment to inclusivity, the public bus shelters are designed to comply with the Dubai Code for People of Determination. This ensures dedicated spaces for wheelchair users. The initiative aims to make Dubai a more accessible and friendly city for people of determination.
