30 years of Amazon: From Cadabra, Inc. to global dominance
Behemoth is on a sustained growth trajectory
Thirty years ago, on July 5, 1994, Jeff Bezos embarked on a journey that would redefine global commerce. Bezos founded Cadabra, Inc., a modest start that would soon transform into the behemoth known today as Amazon.com.
The company’s name change from Cadabra to Amazon was swift. A lawyer misheard “Cadabra” as a “cadaver,” prompting a necessary alteration that would forever shape the company’s identity.
Amazon.com officially launched its website on July 16, 1995, with a bold claim to fame as ‘Earth’s biggest bookstore.’
Despite initial scepticism, Amazon’s relentless pursuit of innovation and customer satisfaction propelled it far beyond the realm of bookselling. Today, Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer and dominates in cloud computing, digital media, and consumer technology.
Under Bezos’ visionary leadership, Amazon’s strategy of prioritising long-term growth over short-term profits became legendary.
Despite early financial challenges and scepticism from analysts, Bezos persisted, reinvesting heavily in the company’s infrastructure and expanding its reach globally. This strategy eventually paid off, as Amazon’s market capitalisation soared, making it one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Amazon’s evolution has been marked by its diversification into diverse sectors. Beyond retail, Amazon Web Services (AWS) revolutionised cloud computing, providing critical infrastructure for countless businesses worldwide.
Additionally, Amazon’s ventures into artificial intelligence, streaming services, and smart devices have further solidified its status as a leader in innovation.
In 2023, Amazon reported staggering financial results, with a profit of $30.4 billion on $574.8 billion in net sales. This figure eclipses its cumulative profit from 1997 through 2019, underscoring its financial might and sustained growth trajectory.
Bezos stepped down as CEO of Amazon in July 2021, passing the baton to Andy Jassy. Despite this transition, Amazon continues to expand its footprint globally, innovate across sectors, and push the boundaries of technological advancement.
As Amazon celebrates three decades of unparalleled success, its legacy as a pioneer in e-commerce and technology remains firmly entrenched in the annals of business history.
