General Authority of Sports launches Sports Leadership Empowerment Program

UAE, February 10, 2023– The General Authority of Sports (GAS) launched the ‘Sports Leadership Empowerment Program’ to prepare young national cadres to work in various administrative fields within the sports industry. The program is consistent with the ‘Principles of the 50’ initiative and other governmental efforts to encourage investments in human capital and accelerate talent development.

The program features a range of lectures and workshops on topics such as sports leadership, sports organisations, sports regulations and laws, sports diplomacy, international relations in sports, communication, negotiation, and sports marketing.

During the inauguration, H.E. Saeed Abdul Ghaffar, Secretary General of the General Authority of Sports, said: “The program reflects our commitment to supporting governmental directives and efforts to launch transformative projects and initiatives that will effectively contribute to shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Additionally, through this program, we hope to improve the participants’ competence, while also enhancing their administrative skills, in an effort to prepare them for a variety of leadership positions within the sports industry.”

He added: “The program also aims to introduce participants to a series of principles that signify the fundamental pillars of administration in the sports sector, in keeping with the vision of our wise leadership to strengthen governance and enhance workflows. We believe that this will further pave the way for new opportunities, and contribute to national and international achievements.”

Omar Abdul Rahman Al Ali, Director of the Sports Leadership Centre at the General Authority of Sports, said: “The ‘Sports Leadership Empowerment Program’ will empower national cadres, develop their capabilities, and broaden their knowledge on multiple aspects of administrative work in the sports sector. This will allow them to assume leadership roles in various sports institutions at the local, continental, and international levels, which will eventually contribute to enhancing the UAE’s presence on the global sports stage, thereby attracting more prestigious sports events and tournaments to the country.”

Participants in this program must meet a number of requirements, such as possessing a higher education certificate and prior work experience in the sports sector. In addition, the program will give participants the chance to take advantage of numerous specialised training courses that will further enhance their abilities.

The first day of the program began with a lecture on sports leadership, by Dr. Ahmed Al-Mutawa, Member of the Board of Directors of Al-Nasr Sports Games Company. The session was followed by a workshop, which was presented by H.E. Major General Dr. Muhammad Al Murr, Director of the Dubai Police Human Rights, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, and Member of the Consultative Council of the Emirate of Sharjah.

The activities for the second day included a lecture on sports organisations, presented by Dr. Ahmed Saeed Ragab, Professor of Sports Administration at Helwan University, along with a workshop by H.E. Major General Nasser Al Razooqi, President of the UAE and Asian Federations, and Vice President of the World Karate Federation.

On the third day, the program organised a lecture focusing on sports regulations and laws, as well as sports diplomacy, which was presented by Dr. Muhammad Fadlallah, Legal Advisor to the National Olympic Committee. This was followed by a workshop, conducted by H.E. Dr. Adnan Hamad Al Hammadi, Chairman of the Education, Culture, Youth, Sports, and Media Affairs Committee of the Federal National Council.

Dr. Huda Al Matrooshi, President of the Emirates Modern Pentathlon Federation, is set to deliver a lecture on international relations in sports, on the fourth day of the program. A workshop by H.E. Mohammed Fadel Al Hameli, Chairman of the UAE National Paralympic Committee, will also be held on the same day, with the program concluding on February 10 with a lecture on communication, negotiation, and sports marketing.

Through the development of governance and administrative work systems in the sports sector, the General Authority of Sports continues to place a strong emphasis on developing skills in sports leadership.
