The World Food Program Lauds Saudi Arabia For Their Generous Contributions:
The UN World Food Program has commended Saudi Arabia’s critical contribution to the battle against hunger and poverty in the region and beyond. The MENA- Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe Regional Director, Corinne Fleischer, praised the Kingdom’s contributions, which go back over 45 years, and in particular, the assistance given through the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Assistance.
The Longstanding Partnership Between Saudi Arabia And The World Food Program
Thanks to the Kingdom’s donations, millions of people in Yemen, Syria, and other countries were able to receive food and relief aid, ultimately saving lives. Fleischer emphasized the importance of Saudi Arabia’s 2008 $500 million donation to the World Food Program (WFP), which made it possible to finish relief projects and help those affected by high food prices. Similarly, the Kingdom contributed more than $200 million in 2014 to provide food for displaced families in Iraq, Syrian refugees, and South Sudan and Somalia refugees.
Through food aid from the WFP and ongoing support from donors, they have been able to minimize famine-like conditions for years. For example, recent projects by WFP contributed to reducing such conditions for an estimated 161,000 people in Yemen. Fleischer noted that Saudi Arabia was the WFP’s fifth-largest donor in 2018 and 2019 and emphasized the importance of their partnership in addressing pressing humanitarian challenges.
Fleischer emphasized the concern of the UN organization on the effect of the Ukraine crisis on world food security. The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is also one of the worst in the world, with the conflict in Ukraine causing a wave of collateral famine that is sweeping the globe. Also, due to increasing prices, more than half of Yemen’s population currently experiences food insecurity, and they believe things will only get worse in the coming years.
Fleischer expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s support and emphasized the importance of their continued partnership. They can address humanitarian issues while also representing the interests of the Kingdom in this area by taking a logical approach. As global food prices continue to rise, the partnership between Saudi Arabia and the WFP is crucial in ensuring that the most underprivileged populations can access the resources they need to survive while global food prices keep rising.
WFP is making a concerted effort to raise funds to help them achieve their mission. They are exerting every effort to garner support from people, businesses, and governments around the world.
Takeaways
The UN’s World Food Program (WFP) recognizes and praises Saudi Arabia for its great work in the fight against poverty and food insecurity around the world. The Kingdom and the WFP have worked together for a long time, which has helped save lives in Yemen, Syria, and other places. The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the WFP is important for solving urgent humanitarian problems.
