US okays $2.8 billion military support sale to Saudi Arabia

Involving logistics and programme support

The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Saudi Arabia involving system logistics, sustainment support, and related elements at an estimated cost of $2.8 billion.

This determination, communicated to Congress by the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency, includes comprehensive logistics and programme support.

The proposed sale encompasses follow-on logistics support and services for various systems, including Joint Mission Planning Software hardware, KIV-77/78 cryptographic devices, spares, repair parts, calibration support, and personnel training.

The support is designed for various aircraft, including KC-130J, C-130, E-3, RE-3, KE-3, KA 350, Bell 212, and Bell 412.

The support will enhance Saudi Arabia’s ability to address current and future threats by improving sustainment and training for its existing air force platforms.

According to a US Defence Security Cooperation Agency statement, the sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives by boosting the security of a key regional ally, Saudi Arabia.

The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency noted that Saudi Arabia plays a significant role in political stability and economic development in the Arabian Gulf region.

The transaction will not impact the overall military balance in the Middle East region and will involve various contractors, though no single prime contractor has been identified.

The implementation may necessitate assigning a small number of additional US government or contractor representatives to Saudi Arabia. The proposed sale is not expected to affect US defence readiness, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency noted.

The estimated cost reflects the highest anticipated value, with actual expenditures potentially lower based on final requirements and budget negotiations.

The Saudi armed forces, including land forces, navy, air force, and air defence, play a crucial role in safeguarding the Gulf nation. Equipped with modern military technology and supported by significant international partnerships, Saudi Arabia is pivotal in maintaining regional security and stability.
