Journaling is Americans’ #1 self-care activity

Exercise comes in at #2

New data has revealed that journaling is the most Googled self-care activity in the United States.

The Manhattan Mental Health Counseling study shows that journaling is the most popular method in 14 US states, surpassing other popular methods like exercise and yoga.

The research, which analysed search data from Google for over 49 self-care activities, highlights significant regional preferences.

Journaling emerged as the favourite in states including North Carolina, Washington, Arizona, and Wisconsin. This reflects a growing trend of individuals seeking solace and self-reflection through written expression.

Exercise, a classic choice for maintaining physical health, came second, leading the search charts in 11 states. Its popularity is particularly noted in Alaska, where residents embrace the state’s rugged terrain for outdoor workouts, and in states like New Mexico and Texas.

Yoga also garnered attention, being the top self-care activity in six states, such as California and New York. This aligns with the active lifestyles in these regions, where residents seek balance through yoga’s calming practices.

Podcast trend

Podcasts, a modern source of relaxation and inspiration, took the lead in five states, including Virginia, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. This reflects the trend of turning to audio content for stress relief and mental stimulation.

Meditation and music each topped the charts in three states. Meditation, known for fostering mindfulness and inner peace, was preferred in Illinois, Maine, and Michigan. Meanwhile, Montana, North Dakota, and Oregon preferred music as a therapeutic outlet.

Interestingly, self-care practices like essential oils, baths, and pedicures also had their moments of popularity. Essential oils were most searched in Iowa and Ohio, while residents of Colorado and Mississippi favoured relaxing baths. Pedicures were a hit in Florida, and Hawaii residents opted for massages as their primary self-care indulgence.

Natalie Buchwald, a lead psychologist at Manhattan Mental Health Counselling, commented on the findings: “The diverse self-care preferences across the United States reflect the unique ways individuals prioritise their well-being. Self-care is a personal journey shaped by individual needs and regional cultural nuances. Finding what works best for you is key to maintaining balance and wellness.”

Self-care priority

Buchwald emphasised the importance of prioritising self-care, encouraging individuals to explore various methods to discover what best suits their needs. “Whether journaling, exercise, or another practice, creating time for yourself is essential. Prioritising self-care will leave you feeling refreshed and energised throughout the year.”
