As part of its commitment to enhancing comprehensive services for People of Determination, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment (MBRHE) has organized a specialized Sign Language Diploma in collaboration with Rawad Training Center. The two-week diploma saw the participation of 9 employees from various departments of the institution, with the goal of developing their skills in effectively communicating with People of Determination and ensuring optimal service provision.
This diploma is part of the National Policy for Empowering People of Determination and in line with Dubai’s “My Community… A City for Everyone” initiative, which aims to make Dubai a People of Determination-friendly city. The program also aligns with the People of Determination Strategy, which seeks to achieve equality and provide dignified living for all members of society, while promoting active participation and equal opportunities.
The Importance of Teaching Sign Language in Government Institutions
Teaching sign language is a crucial tool in supporting government efforts to provide inclusive services for all, ensuring People of Determination have equal access to government facilities and services. The program aims to familiarize participants with the deaf community and train them on the Emirati Sign Language Dictionary for the Deaf, enabling them to provide more interactive and effective services to this group.
Sign Languages: Complete Natural Languages
Although they differ structurally from spoken languages, however, sign languages are fully-fledged natural languages. There is also an International Sign Language used in international meetings by the deaf during travel. It is a simplified language with a limited vocabulary compared to more complex natural sign languages.
