Italian Coast Guard to get ATR42 Maritime Patrol aircraft
Deal signed with Leonardo
Leonardo has contracted with the Italian Coast Guard to supply an ATR42-600 Maritime Patrol (MP) aircraft. The new addition is part of the Coast Guard’s broader strategy to renew and enhance its aircraft capabilities, complementing its existing fleet that includes ATR 42-400 and ATR 42-500 models.
The ATR42 MP, based on the ATR42-600 commercial turboprop, is the latest evolution in the maritime patrol aircraft series.
The aircraft combines advanced platform technology with cutting-edge systems. It has multi-domain sensors and state-of-the-art research and communication tools. Its real-time data transmission capability significantly enhances operational efficiency across the Italian Coast Guard’s command structure.
Designed to perform multiple roles, the ATR42 MP will primarily support maritime surveillance missions, patrolling Italy’s coastline and international waters. The aircraft is also expected to assist in search and rescue (SAR) operations, counter-piracy efforts, and the fight against drug trafficking.
With Leonardo’s ATOS (Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance) system, the ATR42 MP integrates many sensors and provides operators with a comprehensive, real-time tactical overview of complex situations. Its user-friendly interface ensures the crew can make informed decisions quickly, contributing to the success of critical missions.
Incorporating the reliability and efficiency of the ATR 42-600, the new maritime patrol aircraft promises long-term maintainability, low lifecycle costs, and enhanced crew comfort—ultimately improving operational effectiveness.
As part of the Italian Coast Guard’s fleet, the ATR42 MP will help safeguard Italy’s vast maritime borders while supporting various national and international missions.
The Italian Coast Guard is a branch of the Italian Navy responsible for maritime safety, law enforcement, and environmental protection. It conducts search and rescue missions, tackles illegal trafficking, and manages marine pollution. The Coast Guard performs its duties using aircraft and various surface vessels, including multi-role offshore patrol ships. It is vital to Italy’s maritime security and humanitarian efforts.
