Emirates Thoracic Society set to Illuminate Burj Khalifa for World COPD Day Awareness

On November 20, 2024, the skyline of Dubai will witness a significant event as the Emirates Thoracic Society illuminates the Burj Khalifa in a vibrant display at 8:00 PM to mark World COPD Day. This initiative is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and to highlight the importance of early detection and proactive management of this chronic respiratory condition.

The evening promises to be a beacon of information and solidarity, engaging the community and visitors alike with messages displayed on the LED facade of the world’s tallest building. The event is set to spark discussions on the prevention and management of COPD, a disease affecting millions worldwide but often detected in its later stages.

“In an effort to cast light on COPD, we chose the Burj Khalifa, a symbol of vision and strength, to echo the critical message of early diagnosis and treatment of lung health,” says Prof. Bassam Mahboub, head of the respiratory department at Rashid Hospital, Vice President of the Emirates Thoracic Society “This illumination is not just for those suffering from COPD, but for the entire community to realize the impact of respiratory health awareness.”

The dangers of undiagnosed or late-diagnosed COPD are profound, including severe respiratory distress, frequent hospitalizations, and a significant decrease in quality of life. Early detection can drastically alter the course of treatment and management, improving outcomes and reducing complications. “It is vital that we understand the risk factors and recognize the symptoms early on, as proactive management is key in preventing the disease’s progression,” emphasizes Prof. Bassam Mahboub.

The Emirates Thoracic Society has also organized pre-event workshops and media engagements throughout the day to educate the public on the risks associated with COPD, the importance of lifestyle choices, and advancements in treatment options available in the UAE.
